Last year during the 'Great Herring Drought of '02', I trolled up some springers using whole anchovies.
Does anyone have any thoughts, or better yet, success stories from this year, on using anchovies for K-fish wraps, instead of sardine?
In some of the stores (like FMS), the anchovies look a lot fresher than the sardines - many of which look funky and freezer-burned.

Gary, we picked up 10 lbs. of herring at Pacific Seafood on Powell in Portland for about $14. The total number came out to about 58 sardines. That's cheap for a season of baitwraps, better than 4 or 5 bucks for three sardines you could use to fish halibut or lingcod with.

GaryK,
I know there was a thread a while ago about buying Sardines in bulk. I got 50 of the critters for $10 in Astoria. Freeze them up and you got all the bait you need for a season of springer fishing for $10! The nice thing about sardines is they hold A LOT of scent. They milk out for over an hour on the kwikfish.
Maybe I will see you on the water tomorrow at that secret spot

Yes, I recall that advice. It's just that we don't have anyone coming or going to Astoria in the forseeable future.
So, that and the condition of the local sardines got me thinking about the 'chovies. But you seem to indicate that the sardines put out more scent?
I may try both tomorrow in a comparison taste test, and let the springers decide.
Unless the wind is just howling, and forces us into MC, we'll see you out there!
