While fishing in a boat, using holders. Do you set the hook while the rod is in the holder? or out of the holder?

That is , providing you fish with adjustable, open style holders I geuss. I seem to just pop'm, while in. Seems to be open enuogh. Works for me
If I were to fish with mono (I don't), the hook set depends a great deal on how I'm fishing. If I'm trolling, my rod is in my hand, so I wouldn't put the rod in the holder. If I'm anchored and have a plug or wobbler or spinner out, the fish is likely to tighten on the line and set itself. I guess I don't understand the question.

Mono for Salmon & steelhead, with a loose drag.
They will turn their head and hook themselves, if you let them. You will also bring more home. In other words don't break your neck getting to the rod holder.

If I set the hook in the rod holder I would just break the rod holder and rip it off the boat. As for brain, I am not sure what that is.

I fish from an anchored boat for springers and mainly use wrapped QF with mono leader and braided ML. I never set the hook. I let the fish hook itself. If the rod stays buried in the holder chances are you will get the fish to the boat. I used to try to grab the rod and set hook, most of the time the fish has not got a good bite on the lure and you pull it away from them. Ive actually seen take downs that didn't stick and about 3 seconds later leaving it alone in the holder the fish slams it again and sets the hook all by itself!!

The mistake I see is letting the line go slack when taking the rod out of the holder. Hook setting is really over rated! Mostly broken tackle and rods. A few firm pumps is adequate.

Concerning "SPRINGERS" with a trolled herring.
Rookies should leave the pole in the holder until the skipper gives the okay to set the hook. Skippers should be allowed the indulgence of holding the pole and feeling every nip and tug until the fish is ready to have the hooks driven home. This is for trolled herring, mind you, I can't speak for other methods.
