I read in the paper today that they are thinking about closing the lower river to spring chinook because the netters caught more than they expected what do you guys think.

See closure rumors (http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=023042) I for one think it would suck.

I think they should FINE the you know what out of them for EACH fish that they kept over their limit. What they do should NOT effect ours. If you ask me that is NOT cool at all. What do they have more time to net, because I seen a gillnet boat today off of sauvie island. I think its only fair if we get to keep as much as they do. Sorry for the venting but my god give me a break, we are already giving them the rest of our sturgeon, now they want most of our salmon too.

MAD. I think everone should call odfw and let them know what good a 10 hour season did. We put way more money into fishing system and we get cut out. The D___ gillnetters win again, When will we get off our butts and show up and make some noise. We need to make them extinct and make flower yard ornaments out of there boats.

Could we sue the gillnetters?

The most irritating part of this possible problem is that the voters had the chance to get rid of the gillnets in the early nineties. Why cant we start a ballot that would ban all nonnative gill/tooth tangle nets in Oregon?

I agree with you Lepper. If they can't use them then somebody must and tuna is so much fun fishing for.

This, once again, points out the need for a selective fishing method for commercial harvest of these fish.

Outfishem,

This should be the link for the posting of the commercial and sport regulation changes.

Fish Information Center (http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/InfoCntrFish/InterFish/Index.html)

Where did you see the article on a possible early closing of the sport springer sport fishing?

Outfishem,

Found the article on Columbian website but they want $2 to read it.

The blurb noted that the commerical Chinook landings were 2,600 vs. the budgeted 1,700.

Hopefully that 900 salmon difference won't have a huge impact on the sport fishery.

Here's the only thing I could find on the WDFW website.

The recreational fishery in the lower Columbia, which will target 11,000 hatchery salmon, is being conducted under a 2001 federal, state and tribal management agreement for spring chinook that allows selective fishing while minimizing impacts to protected wild fish. Fishing may close prior to May 15 if necessary to protect wild upriver fish. (http://www.wa.gov/wdfw/do/feb03/feb1103a.htm)
