Ok….this a tradition, so I happily comply. Ya’ll have a need to hear of my fishing stories…….here goes:

I was born and raised in Bend, Oregon what seems like a long time ago. Fished the Deschutes and Tumalo rivers quite a bit with a fly rod. Then in 1980, decided that being a ski bum wasn’t going to pay the bills and joined the USAF for 4 years, which turned into a 20+ year carreer. Spent several years in the New Mexico desert, didn’t like it much and now I’m home again.

I have a couple fishing stories from the past couple decades, like when I was fishing off the dock at White Beach Naval Station on Okinawa and something grabbed a brand new $120 graphite ultra-lite rig, jerking right it out of my hand and taking it to the deep. First cast in a place that hadn’t yielded a more than a 2 lb perch in something like 25 days fishing there.

Next good fishing day was out on a charter boat off the same island where we caught Spanish Mackeral, Mahi-Mahi, Dorado….nothing like trolling as fast as you can water ski and seeing a fish slice through the waves to hit a lure. Seeing a rod that’s as thick as your little finger at the tip bend - and listen to line scream off the reel is a rush. FISH ON!!!!!!

Then there is the time I caught a 16 lb octopus in 200 ft of water - felt like I was bring up a sack of active potatoes. No idea why an octopus would try to grab a hook…they’re supposed to be pretty smart. Keeping that one in the cooler, even when sitting on the lid was an experiment in sobriety……..

Then I came back home…. Well, Beaverton, anyway, and did a Google search on fishing.. Found several sites with a lot of information. HOLY MOLY>>>>>>>
People are catching fish that weigh A LOT…they’re called steelhead. And there are pictures as proof! You even get to keep some of them! So, I immediately dropped a couple hundred bucks on license, tags, jigs, floats, spinners, etc., and hit the Wilson and Trask rivers. So far I have lost most of the gear I bought, fell into each of the rivers, damn near froze to death, driven a gazillion miles and am ready to hit Henry Hagg Lake in order to feel the rod bend, however lightly.

Anybody out there willing to help a slightly less than middle age guy figure out where, when, and more importantly, how to fish for the elusive steelie?

With best regards......
