ST.HELENS --

We took the 'ol Rarin' To Go out again today to see if we couldn't catch a couple of those wiley silver bullets running up the river. We spotted a fellow Ifisher in an older Alumaweld, so whoever you are...good seein' you!

The day started with me learning about wrapping kwikfish with fish and other scents. Very interesting. I was wondering why you couldn't just put a piece of velco on the lure and use the scent on it, but I guess if you want to be a true fisherman you have to deal with slimey stuff. The question I had, was the back hook kept getting caught in the bait. Isn't this bad? I don't know, I was going to ask my dad but forgot.

So, after my father shows me how do do this, he breaks out a thing of crushed garlic.
"The fish love garlic," he said and slid his kwikfish down the line.

I rolled my eyes thinking it was like the bananna legend or the Lemon Joy incident that I got caught up in last summer (I had the entire boat smelling like Lemon Joy and everything was slipping out of my hand because I was CONVINCED that fish love Lemon Joy).

I kid you not, we all but sat down and his pole starts going crazy. Fish on!

I reel in, pull up the socks and break out the net. Luckily on this day we had decided to anchor off by ourselves because I am not entirely sure how we would get the anchor back (we don't have a front deck it is a cuddy cabin).

Two weeks ago, when we caught a native, I netted it with no problems. Truth be told, that was the second fish I ever netted, so I'm still learning. Also, I am a spazz, so you can see this coming right?

I put the net in the water and hit the fish on the head, the hook pops out of the kwikfish and goodbye fish. Oh, did I mention it was a hatchery fish? Yeah. Nice going Pat.

The rest of the day, I was lathering my kwikfish up with garlic but nothing. The day was fairly typical Oregon day and we did see some fish caught. Not tons though.

I am also learning to tie knots. When I was pulling up my lure to rescent it, guess what? I was reeling along and suddenly it didn't feel like I was dragging the kwikfish to the surface anymore. That was because I wasn't, my knot slipped and I lost a kwikfish. Oops.

Today I wasn't fishing, I was losing. That just goes to show you that when you make fun of your father, Karma will slap you around (sorry dad). It is kind of cool to see that even though I am 32 I can still learn from my pops. I should have paid more attention to him when I was a kid, then I would have learned all this stuff a long time ago....oh well.

On a unrelated note, there were about 20-25 boats along Sand Island today and at about 1 p.m. (I think) a gill netter put his net out right at the entrance of the Multnomah Channel by St. Helens Marina. I thought that was kind of rude, and I watch through my binoculars what he was doing. I am not sure that affected our fishing, they were off toward the shore more than we were, but I still thought it was unclassy.

I was going to post a picture of this, but decided it was too depressing.

Hope some of you had better luck than we did today. Still, it was a good day to be away from the office and relaxing. So not all was lost.

We are planning on hitting the river again on Sunday and hopefully this time the fishing gods will smile on us.
