View Full Version : AK Killer Whales do justice!!!!!!
You guys have to check out this article.
An AK "transient" pod of killer whales has eaten up to a third of the seals in Puget Sound.
It is the stuff that we have always dreamed up, just never though would happen!
Any one for creating a trancient killer whale mophia?

The orcas occasionally visit Tillamook Bay and Nehalem around this time of the year. I have not seen them or heard of them this year. They are reputed to be seal hunters. I think there are some pictures at Smith's seafood processing located at the end of the Garibaldi pier. I cannot seem to find my pictures of past visits - will post when I can scan some in.

I heard about this awhile ago when it was happening. It is in the hood canal area and not where we have had the biggest problems in puget sound around seattle. I was also under the impression that these were the local seals that have lived in the area longer than we have been around. Not the california sea lions that have caused us the devestating damage that are not indigonous to the pacific northwest. I could be wrong on this but that was my understanding.
I saw them right near Alki Beach the water was red with seal blood and an amazing amount of gulls picking up the s*****!

I have heard of this happening in Yaquina before. Maybe we could lure them up the Columbia ?

I got to say there is a lot of fun in seeing Orcas flail around a bunch of seals and sea lions, but they have an appetite that includes Salmon. Orcas can easily out swim and sea lion, and sea lions out swim salmon, therefore when the sea lions are weary the Salmon will be next on the diet I think?
Anybody remember that sickly little orca in the sound that was chasing that Salmon around. It pretty much had its way with it. I was really amazing!

Hey... I saw "Free Willie" six times and he never ate anything bigger than a herring! That kind of stuff doesn't happen in the wild! All the animals live together, like bambi and flower and thumper and ....
I try to be good, I really do. :hoboy:

About 15 years ago when I was a wee little lad, we used to stay in Newport on our boat and fish the whole weekend. On a friday evening we heard something going on and jumped out of the boat to see seals shooting all over the place and jumping up on the docks. To say the least the killers where right behind them. Several half chunks of seals got tossed and landed on the ends of the docks and it was absolutely mayhem for about 20 minutes and then they left and all was calm. To say the least I never got any sleep that night. It was one of the coolest things I ever saw.

There are two kinds of orca pods. The resident ones normally eat fish. That includes salmon. The other kind, the "nomads" are usually mammal snackers. It seems to be a learned behavior vs an instinct.
I am curious about the use of the word justice. That implies human standards that don't exist in nature. Some orcas eat salmon and thats bad? Most seals and sea lions eat fish and thats bad? Some orcas eat seals and thats good? I'm thinking that things eating things is the way its been for just a little while now and humans only have a problem with it when it isn't them doing the killing. We are but a small piece in a big puzzle with too much influence on it all.

Of course, you're right, STG. But I have to admit I applauded back in 1993 or '94 when a small pod of killer whales came into the Siuslaw estuary and terrorized the seals/sea lions...thinned them out a little....before abruptly leaving.
