Screw trap results;
Exciting, is the only words that can describe the early results of the screw traps on the North Fort Nehalem River.
A screw trap is a device that captures the out migrating Smoltz and fry from the spawning beds to where they can be counted and classified.
Why do I say exciting? We are now unraveling the migration of the Smoltz and fry from the spawning beds on the upper river. to the ocean.
If you remember that North Fork Nehalem has been extensively logged from the early ‘60s up until now, we find all the doom and gloom that was preached about the loggers has turned out to be simply untrue, And the early results of the screw trap are showing excellent results of spawning activity in the upper River.
Everybody should check with the district bio and find out if there is the screw trap in your area , if there is ,get involved with them I think you will be amazed at the results of their work.
I have the pleasure of working with the people doing research on this river which consists of the screw traps ,counting fish on the spawning beds ,and the radio tagging studies,
They are extremely helpful [besides being good-looking] in passing on information to me, which I will pass on in later articles.
