Another new outdoor store for the Portland area. I heard that Cabelas is going to move into the old Best store on McLauglin Blvd. Anyone know more about this?
Don't mess with my emotions that way
It would be great if they did but I'm not holding my breath.

GI Joe's has been disappointing. They have very little termial gear that has strength ratings. They have a lot of sexy plugs and blades...but not much in the way of heavy accessories. And rod selection has gotten really sparse.

I've heard this before. Last time it was the old Larry's in OC that FMI eventually snapped up.
Believe it when I see it.

Sportsman's warehouse(I beleive its called) in Salem is the best I've seen in Oregon so far. Service is hit or miss, but the last few times I was there the service was great. I drool every time I walk in there.

If Cabelas does indeed come to Portland area, I will have to move into a larger house to house more fishing stuff. I had the blessing to visit one of their stores in Nebreska, and I ended up nearly maxing out my MasterCard. Several rods and reels still have the plastic on them or are in boxes  It's just awesome to see rows and rows of rods, reels, etc.

For what it's worth, I just drove by there, and the "For Lease" sign is still in place, and no sign of life or activity in the building.

A good family friend of mine does marketing for cabelas. No I don't get good discounts.... She just left the portland area and now works for them in minnnesota. I'm sure she would have said something the other day when I talked to her, if they were opening a new store here in pdx. We'll see

Cabelas form has been to build new store from the ground up. Mostly along major freeways with plenty of parking.

I doubt it's true. I've been to their newest store in Kansas City and also to the Bass Pro store in Springfield, MO. All of the big stores like those are built from the ground up and all of them seem to be in the midwest and cater primarily to bass fishing. I guess that's where the real money is at. I'm a Cabela's addict though and would love it if they would build a store on the west coast.
These big stores are ok, but lets not forget the small guy. BC, Great American and so on...

Hello,
I spoke to the guys in my office who focus on Retail Properties and unfortunately yes...it's only a rumor.
Cabelas would much prefer to own land and Build versus modify and existing building. I don't believe they lease either...

It doesn't really make sense. Considering where Cabelas' retail outlets are now a logical move west might be Denver or Salt Lake but from the beginning you kind of knew it was to good to be true. I would also like to jump on the Sportsman's Warehouse band wagon, that place is sweet.

Don't get your hopes up too far. Say it this way, I've been to most of the Cabela's stores built before 1999. Not one was put into an old building. All are custom built, and usually resemble lodges. And, most are put in remote areas usually. Only a couple are near built up areas. May be a rumor. But, if they are coming, they'll be tearing building down and rebuilding. The only time Cabela's has used old buildings was the original Sidney location and the Kearney location. That's only because they were original stores. Then they built the first super store in Sidney and rest followed. All are new, and look like big log cabin lodges usually.
I had heard they were more looking in the SW WA area. More the remote area. Kind of in between BC and N. CA. I heard originally when I was last back there it was more like Chehalis area. Time will only tell though. I can't imagine Cabela's breaking their tradition of the way the stores are built. Nothing like that homey feel of being in a fancy lodge while you're shopping.

  Here is a fact according to a large construction sign. SPORTSMANS WHAREHOUSE. On 82nd ave just south of Johnson Creek Blvd on the East side of the street. The ground work looks to be almost finished. The building will most likely be a tilt up and be completed by June if my guess is correct. This will be a great improvement in this area. It's about time someone gave Fisherman's a run for their money. Hopefully this will force them to have more inventory at better prices. SPACE FISH
