HELP!!!Took my main and kicker motors in for servicing and was informed I had to have the carborators rebuilt due to lacker build up. Can anyone tell me how to pervent this from happening in the future? I can't afford this but I am stuck this time. Thanks for any ideas.
Jeremy, If those motors are going to sit for more than a month or so you need to put a fuel stabilizer (Stabil) in the gas and run it through the motors before storing them, or better yet, Stabil in the fuel and run the carbs dry.
Scott at Stevens told me he runs a half recomended amount of Stabil in the fuel at all times. Be sure to run a can of Powertune through the 2-stokes at least once a year also.
Gummed up carbs are a boaters nightmare for sure.

If you just unplug the fuel line, and let the fuel in your carb burn out you won't have a problem. I have a 1964 Evinrude and I've always used this method and I've never had to rebuild the carb.

Usually you don't get lacker build up unless the motors sit for a long time. The above suggestions should both work for short term storage. Long term storage (like a year) I would have pulle the fuel lines off and cleaned the carbs up.
If you are mechanically inclined cleaning up the carbs isn't that hard. Just be careful with adjusting the jets.
Out of curiosity did your motors sit for a long time? If not I would get a second opinion.

Thank you for all the help. The fact is that the main had not been serviced in 2 years but was running last fall. The kicker had been un used for a year and when I tried to run it it would not stay running.
Thank you once again all

Another vote for running the fuel out. I do it every time the boat goes on the trailer. I bought my Merc new in '87 and have never had to touch the carb.
Sta-bil is a good idea if you don't use your boat year round.

My mechanic tells me that the unleaded gold,uh gas that we are buying these days is very unstable. It starts to deteriorate (go bad) about a month after its been purchased. He suggests running all the fuel out of the engine every time you use it, and use stabilizer too.

I always mix Stabil with the gas I buy for the boat (92 octane). I also run the fuel out of the motor when I'm rinsing any saltwater out. And finally, gas does start to get "stale" after about a month. That's why I use a stabilizer. If for some reason I don't burn all the gas up,I don't have to dump it out,and waste the money for the "gold".

If you have a 2-stroke with oil injection don't run the gas out.It will put straight oil in the carbs(like I did, doh!).Makes it smoke bad until it cleans out. graemlins/stupid.gif
