graemlins/1zhelp.gif I bought a 92 Merc 8hp that needs a little TLC. It is leaking water into #2 cylinder. I was told it could be possible, Water pump seal, exhaust seal or hole in water jacket. graemlins/stupid.gif

I'm not good with fixing motors so if someone can point me in the right direction of a member that is I will either pay them for there time or trade fishing trips.

Unfortunately, water in the cylinder is not a nice problem to find/fix. Definitly not a water pump problem (water pump is located in the lower unit just above the gearcase). Probably a crack in the powerhead somewhere, but difficult to say where. It may have frozen during the winter with some water captive in the cooling system. I'd take it to a reputable Merc. dealer and have them diagnose it for you (not a backyard job). Then make a decision about fix or scrap. If it's not feasible to repair, you might still get a few bucks out of it from one of the outboard/marine salvage shops. There are a couple of big ones in Portland. There are probably a lot of pretty good motors available for $600-800 much like yours. Checking compression should indicate a crack also.....should be about 5 psi (15 max) difference between the two cylinders that would indicate normal wear. Anything more is a problem in the making.

Good luck....hope it works out.

Fishinnut30 I know a guy who does work on boat motors he does a really good job and he is really fair about what to charge on repairs. He does all the repairs on my outboards. Also he is alot cheaper than a marine place. If you are interested send me an email and i will email his number to you. email is markgaines122@yahoo.com

I am a marine mechanic and would love to take you up on your offer, however, I'm a little out of the way. I can offer a little insight with a disclaimer added in that I have not seen your O/B. A common problem with water in the cylinders is usually caused by failed exhaust cover gaskets and or cylinder block gaskets(the cover at the top of the cylinders @ the spark plugs. They will usually last a lifetime but, will begin leaking after a "heating" episode. This heating may be traced to a weak or failed water pump impeller or other lack of cooling. Replacing these gaskets is relatively inexpensive as the labor does not require powerhead removal. The cover(s) themselves may warp requiring replacement in addition to gaskets but they are'nt too much either. 2 hours shop labor should be the max charge plus parts. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Bill
