I have heard many things about prawn spinners for chinook. I fish in the Puget Sound, and have had luck on a bare Blue Fox spinner. Do you guys think that a herring on a spinner would invite more strikes, or simply lose me money on bait?

I use spinners in front of my herring a lot! In fact I make them. Just build a standard "Springer" spinner w/ plastic beads and a # 5 or 6 blade,,,,,,color is your choice, but I prefer Pearl white with black , blue or green tips, and then a ball bearing swivel instead of a hook, 2-3' of leader on a mooching rig and herring. I run these behind my downriggers and have good success for springers, fall chinooks, and even bouy 10 silvers. I used to backbounce em in the M/C for springers and did very well with them there also.

when I troll plug cut herring for springers, I will often slide 6-8 red or green (or combo) beads and a clevis & blade right above the top hook on my herring rig.

I try it all the time, to the dismay of whoever is running the boat...I don't think it makes a lot of difference, but I feel better.
I have had trouble with the spin, though...I tend to cutplug in a way that leaves the herring spinning opposite the spinner. The offset effect is a listless herring...hmm...maybe oughtta leave that alone, come to think of it.
Anyway, I get around it with sliding hooks which I use to put more bend in the herring and thus force the spin...
Man do we ever come up with stuff in the bored zone between bites...
