As mentioned in the above thread by my mate, a meeting is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 7.
Any help, suggestions as to location, day of the week and time and anything else you can think of please go next.
Agenda items need to be nailed down too. Getting caught up on recent events and progress on the projects is on there. We have been seeing a certain unwillingness for any of the pubilc agencies to 'Own' net removal. We are still in the early stages of 'call this other agency' at this point. So we should discuss the removal process and who is willing to do that.
So far we have only found 1. There are more out there, fishing 24/7. If you know of a suspicious snag or anchor grabbing, one way charlie fishing spot, let us know or go find it and give up the GPS #'s.
Let's get this gear out of the water.

There is a gentleman in Puget Sound who is very familiar with removing Ghost Nets from Puget Sound his number is: Ghostnet Hotline at 253-225-0767.
He may be helpful in this effort.
There was a piece on NW Backroads recently about him the link is

Yes, we know a man nicknamed 'Doc'. That show you watched was what started all of the uproar.
Thanks for the tip ....

Okay, I'll go first. I would recommend Saturday, April 12. Mid-day.
Perhaps some of our friends in Washington could recommend a good Vancouver spot? Or maybe we try the DoubleTree. I can't imagine they'd be terribly busy at, say 1 or 2pm on a Saturday afternoon?
Any other suggestions?

Dunno. Seems we're still chasing a ghost. We don't even know what it is, and there's gotta be more we can do to refine our technique.
How about a cupple things:
One, get the camera again and try to get better at control and identification of things down under. Go to a known spot and try to find and identify a known object. Refine and practice.
Two, use what we know about the object in question and make another stab at identification. Get some pictures of the sounder screen while we're there. Take some of the ideas on the main thread and give 'em a try, such as anchor above and let the camera back slowly into proximity. Or send down a heavy line with a weight or claw on it, hang up, and let the camera down the line.
I guess I'm talking about a work party, not a meeting. If it's on a Saturday or Sunday I can come. I don't really want to ask anyone else to do this if I'm not gonna show up as well.
What else? I just don't feel like we're ready for another meeting.

Hmmmmm
I like the idea of a field trip out to the ghost net....high slack would be about 2pm april 12th...
skein has a good idea there...find some one who has an old anchor they don't want and run it down there and just leave it...i have a few red crab buoys we could attach to it...
take the camera cable and attach a 3 or 4" ring to it and slide it down the anchor rope..this will put it right on the net...Hopefully by then the river will clear up to get some better pics
of it.
Then go catch a few springers and go home

Mike: I like the way you think! graemlins/applause.gif
Skein: Of course it sounds like a wonderful plan.. work party instead of meeting. Terrific.
Wonder if anyone else will have reports to share?

Pilar's Mate,
Saturday the 12th is the Wiskey Creek Fin Clipping day and it is also the day of Bait O' Eggs Barview jetty get together. I would love to attend your next meeting, but I was planning on going to both of those events (it is also my sons 21st birthday). Have you thought about the Water Resourse Center at Marine Park in Vancouver? Link (http://www.ci.vancouver.wa.us/watercenter/wrec/index.htm)

love2fish - Didn't know about all that - that's why we have you  My head has been down working the net issue, getting ready for the tunaholics meeting in Newport this weekend and the upcoming spring break. I'm afraid I've not been keeping my eyes on anything past that. (Shhh! Don't tell Pilar, it would ruin my reputation! )
Okay, so maybe we pull it in a week or push it one. Love2fish, will you take the lead on finding out how we could use the Water Resources Education Center? You would qualify as "the community" seeing as how you're a "native"

Pilar's Mate,
I'll try to check out the Water Resource Center tonight or tomorrow and report back. I work construction so my daytime phone time is kind of limited, but I'll do what I can. Do you have an idea how many people, and how many hours we would need the room? I am really looking forward to getting involved in this project.
Thanks for everything you guys have done so far,

Hmmmm... I wonder if we should do a round-up/planning session at around 12:30. Then plan on launching from Marine Park at around 1:30/2pm and running to the spot. Is it feasible? Captain Pilar?
Love2fish, I would just check on the availability for that day and about 50 people. That will be a good start.
Thanks!

A field trip?
Why not! Can we round up a camera again? What is the bag limit on ghost nets anyway?
How do we deal with the fishers that are sure to be there, anchored doing their thing?

Bag limit on nets? Wouldn't that be the same as any "unregulated species"? 25/angler/day?
Maybe the River Patrol would help us clear the area for "net" fishing on the 5th? graemlins/idea.gif

I checked with the Water Resource Education Center today and April 5th was already booked. Saturday the 26th is available if that works for everyone. I will fax the paper work to them tomorrow to set it up for that date just in case. They seem to fill up rather quickly. It looks like we might qualify for the free use of the room, we just have to do the set up and clean up. I'll reserve it from 9 till noon.

Hi Folks, Chrome_Miner here, Just reading this thread, something came to mind about the anchor deal. I would think that we would need something light in weight but heavy enough to get to the bottom, Like a steel treble hook (Big). The reason I say this is because you will have to feel the give of the net. Sending something down big and heavy,im not sure you will get that kind of action.
Second is the time of day you plan to continue the research. You say that there is a slack tide at around 2:30 on April 5th. I would think that we could see this thing on an incoming tide just as easy. I would say that we could get out there when Chinook Landing opens at 6am and go to the site. This way we would not disturb any folks who may want to fish that area that day. The Sturgie season will be over then, however there will be nookie fishers out in that area as well.
What ever you decide to do, I want to be there since I was the one that brought it to the attention of Piler and Mate.
Pilar, maybe you should invite Mr. Monroe along. This would be a great story for him. And Pilars Mate, maybe we should begin to get a few phone numbers handy to some of the TV stations in the area. Like Grant McOmie's number from KATU, I bet he would be all over this. That is if an when this thing is coming up.

CM,
If this thing is as long as we think it is, and it's not all completely snagged on the bottom, I think I've got a way we can at least get a piece of it to the surface for identification. In regards to slack vs. incoming, ideally I think you want slack because whatever you drop down there is going to want to drift and the least amount of drift will make it easier to hit the target. It would also create the least amount of turbulence if we plan to send down another camera. I think we could do it with a minimum of 3 boats there. I'm in but I can only make it on the weekends.

Okay guys - so do we need a place to meet first? Or do we do a boat-ramp briefing?
I don't recall if Chinook landing has a covered "picnic" area... seems to me they do have something of the kind in the park there. Maybe instead of meeting in Vancouver and taking a long boat drive to where this thing is, we meet at Chinook landing instead.
Are we on for the 5th?

I went ahead and made the reservations for the Water Resource Education Center today. I haven't heard if it has been approved yet or not. It will be reserved for Saturday, April 26th from 9 am till noon. I'll update after I hear back from them. Let me know if I need to cancel, or maybe we can hold another meeting on that date.

I will be there anytime that is best for the whole crew. I dont think Chinook has a covered picnic table area, but they have a nice big overhang on the Sheriffs building.

This is kinda redundant, but the "where is the net" part of this story caught my eye, and since this is going to the courts I suspect no one will be able to divulge any particulars. Bottom line is there is gill-netting going on, legal or not. Illegal nets almost surely equates to lost or abandoned nets.

I got a response from The Water Resource Education Center today and they said we could use their community room free of charge. The only problem is that either they or I made a mistake on the date. It is reserved for March 26th from 9 am. till noon. I had requested April 26th. I will cancel the 3-26 reservation tomorrow, but I was wondering if we still wanted it for 4-26. Any ideas?
