View Full Version : new keeper gator reel.. any advice?
I am looking for a set of new gator reels..
I have been looking at the
Shimano Triton 100G
and the Penn GTi 310
and the Ambassadeur Trophy
Anyone have experiences with either of these reels?
Thanks in advance...

Go for the Penn GTi 320. It holds more line for runners.

The Penn GTI is what I've always used. Can't beat them in my opinion. I also have a Shimano Tritan that I like to use.

I have the 321GTi. If you wait it out you can buy the combo at Fishermans on sale for the same price as the reel alone. The Penn rod combo makes a decent set up for $84! I've seen it at this price a couple times.

If the Penn 321GTI is something your interested in I have two that have been used twice. I just could not get used to the left hand reeling. Probably not coordinated enough for them.

My buddy CApt. Hank uses 320 GTIs exclusively for his charter customers. He swears by them. I have a couple too, but my latest favorite is an Okuma. Solid reel for a great price.
I'd seriously consider the Penn 320 Lever Drag Model or the Shimano TLD Lever Drag. Of course, if price is no object, you can dream about a Shimano Tiagra.

I think along the same lines as Pete. I love the lever drags.
Shimano TR2000LD..... We have one Charter Special that is 14 years old. Best reel hubby has ever had. Although I remember at the time, I was pretty ticked at how much it cost! Now I laugh and think that's a fairly inexpensive reel!

Okuma Magda 30 line counter. One heck of a reel and you allways know your back in the same hole where you cought the last fish. I have fought oversize fish with it. $59.95 You can allways use it as a salmon reel too if you wanted. Not to large.

TH,
I would recommend you consider the Accurate Boss 270 or the Accurate Boss 665HM. I have these reels. Both of these reels offer the TwinDrag system. This is an ultra-smooth operating drag system. The 270 weighs aobut 15 oz and the 665 HM 22 ounces. These are non level wind reels. Contact me if you want more info.I use the 270's for chinook and the 665 for albies, halibut and sturgeon. GREAT REELS, PERIOD.

If you decide to try something a little different and trade those mop handles for a steelhead/salmon rod, e-mail me and I can get you on the right track
Get a Pen Senator 113H then put 100 lb. tuf line on it that way you just drag those big gators in graemlins/idea.gif or if your truck gets stuck in the mud you can winch it out

I use Penn 321 GTi reels on my sturgeon rigs. Got 3 of them. They are tough as nails and have a great drag system. I used some 310's for one season and burned 2 out of 3 out!

Don't sell yourself short. Talk to Snapshot about the Snoopy set-up. I myself prefer the Daiwa 50 Sealine or the Lever Drag 50 w/ 80lb braid. doc

If money is not a major factor try the Calcutta 700. This reel is so smooth and casts the heavy weights very nicely. I went to these a couple of years ago. Now when I use a 320 GTI (which is a great reel) I don't like the feel of them. The Calcutta does however not come cheap.

An awsome reel for keepers is a Penn International 975 they are in the same price range as a Calcuta 700 but very much worth it.
I love my Calcutta 400's so maybe I'll look at the 700..
I am actually using my 400's now w. 65# Power Pro and they are ok.. I just wanbted to step up a bit.. I'll check out the 700.
Thanks

Been using Daiwa sealine 50h with 80lb spectra.
Very good for medium and heavy fishing. Bullet proof. IMHO, get an older model. Easy to pull apart and clean. And they are wonderful in the salt. Just dump'm in a bucket of fresh water after each trip.
Peace, Tom

I've got the GTI's, penn sentors and I also use
Shimano TLD5's. Great reels, hard to find.
For shakers a garcia 7000 or a shimano calcutta works good.

The new "Sponge Bob rod reel Combo" is the ticket. Make sure you get the 4lb factory line included. OOOPS1 I meant the Daiwa Sealine 50sv or sh, I forget? It works awesome. The combo works great for keeper crappie.
