I have been fishing around horsetail falls for a few years now and have caught several fish using shad. But I always have to go to the Umpqua to get my bait. Can anyone help me with directions on where to go and what to use below bonneville to catch shad?

From about mid May (+-), you can catch shad not only in the Columbia, but can make a short trip below Oregon City on the Willa. Fish anywhere around Meldrum Bar up to the falls. As for the CR, same time period applies. It can be swift water so I like to use steelhead outfit, (spinning or casting), a #1 jet planer and slider, with white/red Dick Nites, or NeedleFish. Either works well..

Don't forget the area around Coon Island in the MC. Favorite shad set up is gold barrel swivel with a #6 siwash hook attached. Add a 5mm chartruese bead on your leader and fish it behind a hot-n-tot diver or use a 2 foot dropper and 3-4 ounces of lead. Lethal combo at the shad rack.
