I flipped to the B section of the Oregonian today and low a be-hold, I saw a picture of commerical guy, his net, and nice chiniook.............And a Steelhead.

Smaller net mesh protects steelhead HA! HA!

ONe picture is all it took to disprove that line of carp..

Now that we have evidence!!! I want to know is what are the by-catch mortaility rates. You think that guy rushes up every steelhead to that "tank"... I seriously Doubt it

I know ODFW has some sense of the mortaility rates for by-catch. I bet there proablly padded to some degree because if a fish swims off and floats up 2min later, how's that get counted??

I bet the actual percentage of BY-catch survival is VERY low. I bet ODFW has a sense of the actual number and they keep that fact carefully hidden. Otherwise imagine the outcry to ban all nets

ORS: Why don't you join us at our next meeting?

I would hate to think that the ODFW is anything less than very conservative about what they count in terms of mortality.

Recall last year's coho season? weren't they counting every fish caught as a fish killed? Best to err on the side of caution than to deplete a fishery, eh?
