The wife and I got back from Maui early Tuesday morning. I would like to thank the person that recommended fishing with the Charter group "Finest Kind" out of Lahina. The captain and his mate worked their butts off for us and we had a fantastic day. Their were six people on board and we got 5 fish. My wife started the day off with an 86" 60 lb Spearfish. It is in the marlin family but not as big as a striped marlin or a blue marlin. Then it was my turn and I got a Mahi Mahi to come on board. I was surprised at how much a 20 lb fish like that could fight. My wife and I had both caught fish and it wasn't even 9:00 AM. we had quite a lull until one of the other guys on board caught a 100 lb striped marlin.
Right after that the deck hand calls out my wifes number again and she graciously lets one of other men on board get in the fighting chair. The guy brings in another striped marlin that was tagged and released. The captain and the mate are discussing how close they are to a Hawaiian Grand Slam. A Hawaiian Grand Slam is catching a spearfish, a striped marlin and a blue marlin in the same day. We just needed a blue marlin to complete the task.
About an hour before we have to head back to port we get a small blue marlin to the boat and release it with a tag firmly attached. The crew had flags flying all the way up the outrigger line when we got back to Lahina. It was a beautiful site.
My wife is getting her fish mounted and I am going to have to listen to her story every time someone comes by the house to visit. O well, I'll just have to go back to Maui and give it another try.
I'll post some pics when I figure how to do it.
