I have seen fish caught on kwikfish with the aluminum hooks they come with and alot of time the hooks start to straiten out. can anyone tell me if changing to steel hooks changes the action or bouyance of the lure. I have checked everywhere and can't find any info..

I'm pretty sure the original hooks are anodized steel. Lately, the ones that come in the package are quite sharp. However, I do change my hooks to ones I like better and I add a split ring between the original split ring on the belly hook and a swivel to the tail hook. On the belly hook, this prevents a bait wrap from causing the hook to not swing. On the tail, it allows the fish to twist and thrash much more without getting any leverage to loosen the hook. Finally, I change my hooks often. Take-downs are too infrequent to waste!

I change most of mine out to Siwashes. I hook most of the fish that hit, and rarely lose a hooked fish. I lever the eyelet open and put a swivel onto the hook hanger, then add the siwash to the swivel. Finally, I bend a little offset into the siwash. I use Gami 3/0's on K14's, 4/0's on K15's and 5/0's on 16's. I think I catch as many fish on those as most guys, excepting of course the Springers gods like David Jonhson, ******, and Fishnxtc.

Nope. The Gami's (and most siwashes) have an open eye when purchased, so you just clamp them on with a set of pliers.

Or if you're a manly man, with your two remaining teeth.

Eric Linde suggested cutting the eye of the hook at 5:00 with a pair of dikes, bending the eye so it will go over the swivel, and then bending the hook eye back to original shape. He said he's never had a Gami trebel pull straight. I like the idea because you don't have all of those split rings putting your hook way back away from the plug.

To lever the eyes open, use a medium size screwdriver. Sometimes it helps to unscrew the eye one turn first. Remember to screw it back in when done.

I meant to clarify that my suggestion was for treble hooks.

(Can't figure out how to edit posts with this new format)

Terry Mulky uses Owner hooks in 2/0 these hooks are really tough and super sharp.

That's because Owner pays him to.

The trebles are pretty hard if you are going to be cutting them.

I like Owner hooks on my Kwikfish. I figure that the relatively few shots I have at these magnificent fish I better have the best shot at hooking them. I'm sold on the Owner hooks. Two years ago I used Gamis but I lost a lot more fish (throwing the hook) than I did when I switched to Owners (last year). Same rod and reels, same line and leader strength.
