They might be back!
Let you know tomorrow. I will be at the ODFW Salmon meeting in South Beach tomorrow and check out the herring situation tomorrow also.

Did hear from a friend that was in South Beach today, and he saw across the bay a bunch of herring jigger's at the "old mooring", near the tank.

Anyone interested might call Englund Marine @ (541) 265-9275

You folks that jig your herring, just curious how you prep them from catch to freezer. A pal and I have considered jigging our own, but he thinks that unless they are starved, flash frozen and then vacuum packed, they probably aren't going to be as good of baits as the packers provide. Not saying he's wrong, but it seems that several of you jig your own baits, and use them with good results. Thanks for any direction on this. I think it would be a hoot to go jig for them.

There was a great article on how they are processed by the bait companies. using nets to keep the herring alive until they are frozen, they slowly tighten up the swimming space, and force the herring to struggle more. This toughens them up as the nets are brought in the herring are flash frozen.

 These spawning herring don't make real good plug cut or whole baits for salmon fishing. They are ok for halibut and bottom fish baits, or for hoochies for salmon. The bellies seem to want to rot out once they are thawed out and then put on a hook. I caught a bunch of 'em years back and wasted them as they were not quality baits for what we like. I checked with three sources yesterday and learned that the herring are back in the bay. Not in the numbers they were on their first spawning run, but in pretty good numbers.

They will probably not be here long if we get the amount of rain that is being forecast over the next few days.

Good luck. SD

Chilly one, these herring make excellent bait for ocean fishing if they are correctly iced and salted and then rebrined just before fishing. I had excellent success with them last year off the columbia and did very well thank you.

As for using them in the rivers and bays, you are correct. However, the big big big herring make for an excellent bait wrap and they are very oily. graemlins/idea.gif

Sorry you wasted yours. I wasted mine on a couple of hatchery tags, my washington license and my oregon license. I havested 100 lbs of herring last year and had about 12 lbs left over. They still look brand new and I intend to use them this summer and even this spring for bait wraps.

BTW, the whole ones work killer on the rotory clips. PS the blue fin sharks like them too! graemlins/idea.gif

Right on Spoiled Daddy.

"They will probably not be here long if we get the amount of rain that is being forecast over the next few days."

I also heard that yesterday morning that the wind was blowing so hard on the north
side of the bay that it was unfisable.
When I came out of the ODFW meeting at 12:30 during break, it was calm on the south side of the bay however.
When I left around 4:00pm, I went over to the terminal dock to get a report, but no one was there.

A friend of mine went this morning and again the weather was too nasty and he did not even try and there was no one there.
