View Full Version : 2nd Annual Springer Flotilla (offical Smack thread)

Gizmo Man
02-27-2003, 05:47 PM
Looking at some dates with tides that would allow us to fish most of the day and to have a bbq afterwards.

Or. Spring break and WA's spring break takes out a couple of weekends that have times that would have accomodated us. What we have left is Saturday, April 19th. Taxes are over and time to fish.

The high tide at ST. Helens is about 7 am and low tide is about 4:30 pm.

So this is the date I am leaning towards so mark your calandars.

I will have a separate thread for team sign ups, offical rules and what you need to bring to the bbq.

SO....I declare, by the powers vested in me (by me) to have at it. Let's just see how good you smack talkers are...and remember to keep it clean..

If you can't handle the smack stay away from this thread, but hope to see you at the big event.

I want to see some good pictures and remember no hitting below the belt...except in Roys case...his belt is right below his neck...

Giz...

Since some of you who may just be starting to read this thread and some who may only read from where this is posted on page 3 I have moved it to the first post as well so we do not miss anyone seeing this. Those seeing this for the first time will see this again on page 3.

And from me and who ever else is helping in this day on the water:

Jennie: Thanks for putting up the disclaimer.

AND NOW I INTERRUPT THIS SMACK TALK THREAD TO BRING YOU A WORD FROM THE LEGAL DEPT. [Smile]

And now for the other disclaimers for those who have never been to a river outing (called flotillas) or for those who may have but forgot the following.

These activities are not hosted or sponsored by any one person or group or bb. They are just a way for us all to be on the river at the same time and then meet at a common place to tell what happened during the day. You bring your own fishing boats, equipment, food and your stories.

Last year, a group of us set out to see which state had better fishers as a result of the past smack talking threads.

Last year we weighted the fish of the participants and WA had the most caught.

There are major concerns about liability when people go to these events. If someone gets hurt, is the bb or anyone held responsible? NO. You are on the river for your benefit not the benefit of any one person or the bb owners or sponsors.

As said earlier a date is announced and who ever announces the date goes fishing with them and several hundred of their closest friends.

If you accept a ride or offer a ride in a boat you and the captain of that boat are responsible to work out the liability issues that may arise as well as sharing of the expenses for the boat.

If you want to eat at the bbq, bring something to throw on the coals just as if you where planning your own picnic. If you want to bring a salad or desert to share that is great!

I realize that I am a moderator on ifish and that I announced this outing. HOWEVER, my or anyone elses involvement in the activity is in no way, shape or form an activity of IFISH, Steelhead.Net or Bob's Piscatorial Pursuits. They are just allowing the use of their Internet services ...these bb's...to announce the activity for the common good of its members. None of these boards or owners has anything to do with the April 19th event. It is a come one, come all day on the river.

With the above said:

Any and all participants should know and they agree that they are participating voluntarily and that there is no one person responsible for this event or the activities that take place in public spaces.

You accept all responsibility for your actions and for any and all damage or injuries that may result from attending any of these activities.
The owners of the bb's and the mods allow participants to advertise events only. They do not endorse, sponsor or in any way have any direct or indirect control or organization of these events.

If you go and some how get injured you agree to accept any and all responsibility and agree to hold harmless any and all other participants to the extent the law allows.

I hope with the above you understand that we are just out for a fun day on the river and a social gathering later. Please understand this.

I would also like to point out for those going that last year many people had their families with them. There will be small children and women there. Please act accordingly. Do not show up if you think this is a keg party or if you intend to make a spectacle of yourself. It will not be appreciated by those attending and you will be subjected to the laws governing the use of Sand Island.

Sorry that I am long winded on this but it has to be pointed out and now it has....

Lets go fishing and resume the smack talk.... (Remember to keep it clean...this is a family bb and many people read it...we can have fun and still keep it clean.

With spring talk of springers, it makes me wonder will trash talk thread get this BIG (http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=000683) , if that happens jennie might need a news server even faster than one might think.

Stuck --- Where we will be fishing you can troll, anchor or beach fish. The beach fishing right at the picnic site (Washington side of Sand Island) was especially good last year, so nobody should feel left out if they do that. All they will need is a lift out to the island, and I'm sure there will be plenty of volunteers for that.

For the out-of-towners there are good places to stay in Woodland, WA and in St. Helens, OR. Search the main Ifish board for extensive discussions on all this from last year.

Team BAD bASS will be back in some form. Remember us? We snuck out about 8am and whacked one in about 3 minutes!

We have been talking about a practice run 5 April. Sand Island and the City of St. Helens deserves a big hand. That is a neat place.

Is this going to be a Washington vs Oregon type of deal again? If so it's time to let those on Bob's board in on the planning. You know we will certainly defend our Side of the River!

No, just anchor your float tube and plunk a line. Actually you can fish from the beach or bum a ride from a fellow i-fisher. Usually at these events someone will post they need a ride or have an extra seat available. As the event gets a little closer I am sure someone will start a thread for this. Might put your name out there if you want to boat this event.

Aunty M. The Oreo' just won't do. We want the homemade goodies. Too bad about the shrimp though. Glad you are coming anyways with or without the cookies. Someone has to do the dishes.

Fishing the Willamette this past saturday there was a little bite happening. Then I heard an all to familiar sounding boat. You know, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang like drone of the boat known as the Bait Of Eggs. Well, the bite flat dies when he sets anchor right next to me. He proceeds to make my 3 and 11 year old boys cry when he fires up his camp stove and cooks up a breakfast of eggs, bacon, and bagels. He does not even offer any to these boys with big puppy eyes and tears running down their faces. You are cruel Roy. Did'nt even throw food at us like he did for Jeffhead last year. Ramstrong, you were party to this too. You should both be ashamed of yourselves.

After I finnally calmed my boys down I explained to them that there are bad men in this world. They understood what I was saying when I pointed at Roy. My youngest then told me "Roy can go kiss a moose" daddy. Fortunatly, BOE moved on after torturing my children. Seems he had a little problem getting his anchor up. Just never know when those pictures might pop up aye Roy? he he he.

AFter BOE left we did catch a fish though. Seems after Roy dumped his bacon grease in the water a school of P-lipps moved in. Spencer go a 4 lb trophy p-lip. But he did the noble thing and blamed it on the BOE vortex.

How many hours you got in now Roy?

not bad smack talk Roy...you have the lead so far...

Norm....It's ok to have mixed state teams..I will be on one...2 from WA and 1 from Or...

If you are asking if the boat has fishers from two or more states can other members of the team weigh in fish not caught on their rod...the answer is no.... only fish on your designated rod are eligible to be weighed in and counted towards the state that they are legal residents....(If a guy or gal who lives in WA catches fish and is using an Or. issued out of state license its gets weighed in as a Wa caught fish even if punched on an Or. out of state license.)

Another example...Say (and no one will believe it) if Bait of eggs' (an Or, angler) rod goes off and 6 fish are landed on his rod ...he hands off 4 of them so he is legal, me and the other guy from Wa do not bring the other 4 to the weigh in and count them for either state. Roy does get his choice of which 2 of the 6 he weights in.

The reason for this is just in case there is a prize for the biggest fish, I don't want someone to say,,," Joe got the prize for a fish caught on my rod..."

Lets keep this simple and fun.....

This is for bragging rights...not begging rights...

Ah, Roy, the arch nemisis and once a year springer catcher. Lets see, just how many hours do you have in so far this year? 30? 40? Couple weeks from now you should be approaching 300 plus. Just think only 99,700 hours to go before that first retard fish runs into your bait with it's eyes closed. graemlins/stupid.gif We will all cheer for ya and say BOE is king for the day. I'll briing my boys old high chair so you can have a throne to sit on. Either that or I can bring his potty chair adaptor and we can afix it to your porta potty on the boat. Just an idea.

PeptoGizMall I appreciate you putting on this event. It's nice that we can keep oid folks like you busy. Now if we can find a rod holder for your walker we will be doing good.

Fungus emailed me the following:
"if I trolled Lake Oswego for springers on 4/19 do you think I could pick up a couple springers and win the floatilla?" graemlins/stupid.gif

My answer was
" :hoboy: ya, I think you got as good a chance of catching a springer in Lake Oswego as anywhere else :hoboy: "

Fungus came back with the following:
"Wanna put a $2 bet on who does better on floatilla day, I have a lucky feeling about Lake Oswego, I have been scouting it and nobody is fishing it for springers, I should have it all to myself"

Do you think he has been eating to many pentium chips with his garden burger for lunch? graemlins/idea.gif

Well (not me, I am still sick), I see that old Catch and Eat and BOE's will be taking the lead on trashing each other. And I thought the old cartoon charaters, Mutt and Jeff and long time disappered.

As far as the big event goes, my plan is to have team registrations (announcement about 2 weeks before the event).

You can fish where ever you want, starting at what ever time you want.

I am going to have a weigh in at Sand Island at 5p.m (Daylight savings time will be in effect then). We will weigh in fish by state. (no hand offs at the weigh in...bring only those fish you caught on your designated rod...no whinning please about this)

BBQ to follow. You will have to bring a main dish for you including your own dishes and flatware. I think I can talk Roy into bringing his bbq again...can you do that Roy).

Prizes...none planned at this time. If anyone wants to donate anything to the event please send me a private email detailing what you would like to donate.

I want to keep this simple...bragging rights only.

I will have a thread trying to help those looking for a boat ride. Usually people with boats and emply seats have advertised these seats and I hope this will happen....I will not be arranging seats for non boaters outside of the thread I will start.

Roy, Walt, Bernie, Rick, Others,

No worries on my lack of smack. I'm saving it till the time draws near. Talk about choices. You picked the opening weekend of turkey season Walt! Not that there would be any shortage of turkeys at that tourney. Mmmmm Turkeys and crackers. Now all I'll need is a little cheese to go with the wine. Either from my reel or all ya'll's boats when you come in empty handed.

Funny though they don't look like the Fall Chinook Roy was catching when I was with him in Tidewater? These aren't as bright as others have posted. I am starting to wonder why he always anchors so far away from everybody else. BTW: these didn't smoke up very well.

Jennie: Thanks for putting up the disclaimer.

AND NOW I INTERRUPT THIS SMACK TALK THREAD TO BRING YOU A WORD FROM THE LEGAL DEPT.

HOWEVER, me or anyone elses involvement in the activity is in no way, shape or form an activity of IFISH, Steelhead.Net or Bob's Piscatorial Pursuits.

I would appreciate you all understanding this and not to go picking it apart or gripping about it. I thank you now for complying with this little request.

Lets go fishing and resume the smack talk....

(Remember to keep it clean...this is a family bb and many people read it...we can have fun and still keep it clean.

SUPPLEMENTAL DISCLAIMER:

Should you have the misfortune of anchoring next to BOE or ABISMAL MAN you may want to bring a gallon of lemon joy and a brush to scrubb your boat and crew mates with. Bad Karma folllow these guys when it comes to springers and the law of averages point to them rubbing off on you.

You are fully responsible for where you anchor and who you anchor next to. Also, we are not responsible should you choke on food given to you from the BOE boat. It may smell good but you may want to check the experation dates on those bacon packages. Especially be careful should he offer you eggs with tabasco sauce. They may be bait left overs from fall chinook fishing.

As Giz and Jennie mentioned, keep it clean kids. Those that don't will be decorated with toilet seat covers. Giz already has to wear on at the diner table now. Seems he has hand eye coordination problems. That and they are a bit cheaper than drool bibs.

Giz, I agree that this flotilla should be for fun only. With some questions arizing about liability I think this should be a day of fishing only. No prizes or anything like that. Everyone just fishes like normal. At the end of the day everyone can meet to compare notes, show their fish if the want. No one should have to be liable for the welfare of others whcih could happen if this were some type of organized tournament.

My .02 worth.

While this comes from last year's Springer King, I fully agree with Stz II. There is no need to have prizes or even suggest this is a tournament. For cryin out loud, that measly 17# Springer was my first Springer ever  and I was lucky to catch it on a day with a 1 fish:10 boats ratio. This was no contest. We were there for fun and thats all there is to it. There is no need for drunkeness, rude behavior, or all these darn rules. For those who need to push the limits described above however, I have a simple request; hand yourself off the island. For the rest of us, the prizes will be our first Springers, our biggest Springers, Roasted Crow, the Pink Baton, and Friendship. Doc.

The task of keeping Piscatorial Pursuits members informed and updated on the upcoming Springer Flotilla has been assigned to me. FP was going to handle this intially, but he is off fishing to excess.

Date: Saturday, April 19th
Place: Columbia River, near Sand Island and Saint Helens
Tide: The high tide at ST. Helens is about 7 am and low tide is about 4:30 pm.
Why: To prove to Oregonians once and for all that we are the best springer catchers, of course! (just kidding!)

BBQ to follow at the Sand Island Marine Park. We are asking that you bring your own main dish and eating utensils. Flotilla's are notorius for having an awesome spread.

We (Giz, FJ or myself) will try and answer any questions you have.

You can use this thread to offer seats, or look for a seat. If you choose to accept or offer a seat, this is at your own risk.

Please be advised, this is a private get together that is not in any way endorsed or sponsored by Bob and Piscatorial Pursuits. In addition, none of the participants sponsor this event. We are a group of fishing pals that get together and brag, show off, whine, snivel and have a good time. Nothing more.

Because of legal questions, there will be no weigh in or prizes of any sort.

There will be women and children in attendance, so please, save the locker room stuff for another time. Besides, I will have my 35mm with zoom lens ready. If you get froggy and do something you will be embarrassed about later, think twice unless you want to see your backside posted on the internet!

Good luck and great fishing!

PS..... Bob did not ASK me to post a disclaimer. It just seems some folks don't have any common sense about these things.

Please keep in mind that this applies to Jennie/ Ifish, and Marty/Steelheader.net as well. They are not endorsing or sponsoring this get together.

Thanks.

I asked Marsha to copy to Ifish what was put up on Bob's PP.

The last few days there have been questions raised about liability, permits, tournments prizes weigh ins etc.

It is just too much to worry about. So the best thing for all is to just go fishing for the day and if anyone wants to be at Sand Island at 5 pm for a bbq I will see you there. Much like the baton events. The big prize will be the baton.

If you have stories to tell or anything you want to show that will be great.

Sorry, for the change, but this needs to be fun for all (including those behind the scenes trying to make this a fun event.)

Why can't we all just go out and have fun like we did last year and not blow all this out of proportion. The BB's are just that they don't really have any control over what is being done at the event it is just a bunch of people getting together to find out once again that Team Bad halibut in unbeatable. I think that last year we had three fish. Did anybody else have three fish for their team. I didn't think so. If you want feel free to anchor beside us and watch the fishing clinic it will be free and informative. However Rick (Baitboy is still working on the springer skunk this year)

So does your walker get in the way when you have to fight a fish? Have you ever dropped your teeth in the river while fighting fish? Do your Depends get filled up when it's an especially large fish? Who grinds up your food during a long day of fishing? Who gives your your medication while you're out there? Is there a comfortable place for you to take your naps?

I suggest you try some suspenders this year so you won't be inclined to have your pants fall down this flotilla. Bare butts are cute on babies, but pretty gross on you old farts.

With Sunday the 20th being Easter I decided it would be a good idea to hide a bunch of the Colorful Plastic Easter Eggs. I loaded them up with all kinds of Fishermans treats, like Sand Shrimp, Eggs, Prawns and even a couple with Sardines. They ought to be pretty easy to find after being out there for a couple of weeks!

Well, you know Live to Fish, practice makes perfect. I wouldn't wanna be at the Springertilla empty handed like so many of our Orygon brothers were last year.

Giz;
Doesn't that walker give you problems in the Sand?

5 cents...ever hear those loosing people on game shows. They say at home they knew all the answers but when they where in front of the cameras for the world to see they choked...performace anxiety I think they call it.

All you young guys will suffer from PA when the big day comes...\

And get a real avaitar. Not something that is put into a blender and turned into juice or is used to bait a 'rabbit'.

Gutz...good idea to hide those eggs last week...I think you and your team will have a noise up finding them...

Giz, you will hear some smack on the day, the smack of team carrots pulling off the water early cuz we done limited the boat. Won't be a problem my friend, we are dialed in and now have 9 different proven combos with our carrot milk.

Well, the guys who were supposed to fish with us had to cancel. Then the season closed on the three days we had planned to fish last week so I did not think it would stay open for the flotilla. Since hubby was not about to take more vacation days, and isn't willing to go the distance for just one day, we aren't going to make this one.

Sniff.... :depressed:

Marsha, sorry you are unable to attend. You know that the Lewis is open as well as the M.C. on Sunday. So although the CR won't be open these rivers will be.

With this said remember this is a smack talking thread...not a....sorry I can't come thread...

(Thanks for your help on this project)

Hi all first post here on iFish! Been lurking for a few days here and love it. Some of you may know me form PP....Been a PP forum member for three years.

Well, I will step into the fray and proclaim that Team BUGS BUNNY is going to eat carrots all weekend long! As a matter of fact, I am glad that you have taken a liking to carrots, because them carrots are good for the eyes, and you will be able to see all the WASHINGTON FISHERMEN AND WOMEN outfish you all weekend long from all the way across the river!!!!

all in fun...

My partner and I will be fishing out of St. Helens in a 16ft. aluminum gregor anniversary edition. See you all saturday night.
