I and a friend , had good chuckle last night while we talked on the phone.
About 5or 6 years ago. It was eary spring (March) the ice had just started to leave the Res.( American Falls ). My self and two buddies decided to go troll the lake for big trout. We were fishing from a 14 ft. Gregor with a 15hp out board.
It was only around 40 degrees , at best , and it was brutal running to the spot where we were going to troll. We were trolling Rapalas and instantly started hooking up. We were the only boat in view. The limit was 5 fish per person .
We were having a hay day, no other boats and just killing the fish. We were about two fish away from having a limit , then, out of nowhere a boat comes racing up( big fancy boat , with top and all) , they came right up to us and yelled "catching anything?". At that exact moment we didnt have a fish on, and , before i had a chance to respond one of my buddies yelled" NO nothing". We were face to face with this other boat and i felt like a lier. We continued to troll away and i was praying that the fish would not hit while we were still so close to the guys we had just told the big fib to.No such luck, we shortly had a bouble. The guys in the other boat were still friendly. They drove right back up to us and yelled "you lied your a-- off to us didnt you" my friend who was fighting a fish with a big grin yelled back " yep". We landed the two fish, had our limit and quit. when we got to the boat ramp, guess who was there. The only two boats on the lake and we had put in at the same ramp.
With friendly exchanges, we dumped the cooler out on the ramp and proceeded to clean all 15 fish, right in front those guys. The other boat had trolled all day without a strike. Hi ho. id. p.

Well now, that'll teach them to ask, won't it! I learned last Fall. Coming back from a slow day of Chinook fishing (for us) I ran into a good acquaintance on the dock. He and his bride had a good day, hauling a couple nice fish up to the cleaning sink. I said "hey Mitch, where did you catch them?". He responded with a sheepish grin "uh, caught this one in the lip, and this other one, she swallowed the bait so caught her in the back of the throat." I guess he didn't lie though did he! That was the last time I asked him that week.....

I did feel guilty. Im not sure why my friend responded with a lie. I think it was a reflex. A lifetime of feeling like you have to compete with the rest of the world, to get your share. I stell feel funny about that fib. So silly. So true.... id. p.

That is why you have to practice non-fibbing responses. So you don't feel bad.

Examples:

"Nothing to speak of" (i.e. I'm not telling you!)
"Geez, we've sure had better days, how about you?" (You have had better days haven't you?)
"We're hoping it gets really good soon!" (You can always hope it gets better!)
"Don't know why we came here to fish" (But sure glad we did!)
"We are still working on getting that wall hanger" (Of course we aren't complaining about the stringer we already have)

painter....are you serious? hey man do not be so hard on yourself or your friend....sometimes a lie is blurted out before given time to think about what is to be said...it just happens......not that I ever fib  mind you, just ask forgiveness from the man above and move on and try to learn from your feelings , like those that you have now? and just don`t do it again if it bothers you. this is getting to deep .....how bout I come over there and dump a bucket of paint on you to make you feel better I`ll even load it up with lots of thinner, that would definetly make you feel better!

Sometimes you also have to be careful about bragging about the fish you catch:

I was trolling for salmon on the Coos river, there was another boat around that I had passed several times that day, I never saw them with a fish on. Anyway I get back to the boat ramp and they are there as well, I started giving them a hard time (I had two fish in the boat both about 25 pounds), I told them they should have been following me around then they would have caught fish too! To my surprise they took it very well, all they did was smile real big and open their cooler...... and took out FOUR chinook ALL over 40 pounds! I couldn't leave fast enough!

Moral of the story.........don't brag until you have seen the other guys catch!
