I'm thinking of trying some Owners for my springer herring rigs. I know lots of guys think they're the best. My question to those of you that use them alot and like them is-Do you have a preference for the needle or cutting point version and why?

Thanks

My preference is for the cutting point hooks. Some people think the cutting point is too sharp and prefer the needle point hooks. Either way you can't go wrong.

Owner Hooks = Fish Evil !
Cutting Points are just dangerous to fish.
Keep out of childerns reach or anything else you dont want ripped.

Cutting points for bobber and eggs and herring.

Needles for drift fishing.

Both are extremely sharp hooks, I like the needle points though?? I suppose just a personal prefferance, either one is sharp as heck.

Like Krue says, needle points for drift fishing.

They can be sharpened after they get dulled on the bottom.

I think the owner hook are very strong but after using both types exclusively for a couple of years here is my Opinion. Owners are very sharp and hold thier point longer that most.

I prefer the needle points for rolling herring, spinner rigs and drift fishing. I just don't think you get that initial point *****/hook up unless they slam it. Sure on a power drive those cutting points really penetrate but any hook will do that.

Cutting point seem to work the best for me, but beware, if you use the treble cutting edge be prepared to cut them out of the fish. I find that they will dig and dig into the fish.

I just keep a pair of wire cutters around and just cut the treble instead of trying and working the hook out of the fishes mouth and causing extensive damage, especially if its a native.

Can't go wrong either way, its an Owner!!
Good luck,
Andy

Well, thanks for all the feedback. I guess I'll try both styles.

Can't wait.

I think I'm getting spring(er) fever!

Needle Points for me, Their easier to resharpen and cost less. But I like the cutting points for bobber fishing fall Chinook.

I also prefer the needle points except for salmon bobber fishing. Then I like the cutting point.

I lost 7 fish in a row on 1/0 cutting point while I was drift fishing for salmon last spring. Head shake on for two seconds and then off again. I switched to Gami and got the next fish (and everyone after that) to the bank. That first one to the bank was hooked in the tounge. I suspected the cutting point hook was cutting its way out of the fish's soft tissue in it's mouth.

I don't know if that was just bad luck or what, but I would either go with the needle point or make sure you are using a large enough hook to get into the jaw of the fish.

I have to agree with you bounty hunter!

When the cutting point owner's first came out I gave them a try. After losing a few fish I went back to Gami"s needle point and have had the best luck.

P.S. Whatever hook you use keep it sharp!

I use cutting point for everything. Did not lose a well-hooked steelhead or salmon last year. Well-hooked to me is a fish that is still on after the first run.

I really like the cutting point hooks. I don't resharpen my hooks. The Owner cutting point hooks are super sharp out of the package and my preference is to just use them once. After I remove a rig, I cut the barb off and put the rest of the rig in my pocket to throw away later.

Bounty Hunter, isn't a 1/0 a little small for salmon - even coho. I have had 2/0's straightened by salmon.

Pinch the barb on 6/0 or 7/0 Cutting Point and you have some darn good Sturgeon medicine.

I also like the cutting points. They have a new salt water version out with the straight eye which is nice for herring set ups!
