I've tried everything out on the Sound. The Salmon are not biting. Does anyone out there know what's biting around here? If so, what are they biting on? graemlins/1zhelp.gif

I don't know what part of the sound you're in but I used to fish point defiance near the ships that they load with grain and do well using bait. I found they don't stray far from there due to all the food in the water when they miss with the grain

newbie- I know a friedn of mine has been doing ok off of Pt. Monroe or the sandspit as it is called. Its the North End of B.I. and can be very good. Not a lot of people fish it but its worth a try.
I grew up in Port Madison and would always fish it and have done quite well out there.
Usually I motor- mooch a cut-plug or whole herring about 10 feet off the bottom. Keep the bait going up and down and you should be able to find some fish. The will usually hit it when it is moving rather than just floating around.
Good luck

Large green/silver flasher, 36" tail to a green/yellow spinner, or black/yellow spinner. Finding a bait ball, having a downrigger does help.

Hey Newbie,
Where have you been fishing? Manchester, Elliot Bay, Pt Defiance, Jeffs Head and Pt Nno Point are all pretty decent producers. Just remember three things Green, Glo and Bounce Bottom!!! Green/Glo Hot Spot flasher with a Triple Glo B-2 squid or a Green/glo spoon (Coyote Spoon, Sonic Edge or Coho Killer) or a Green/Glo Hootchie. I am assumming you are trolling, and you want to troll deep and fast. Bouncing bottom (or ringing the dinner bell as some call it) in 150 to 200 ft of water. Also use a scent on your lures and flashers, I prefer Herring salt smelly jelly or shrimp smelly jelly.
Have you been to piscatorialpursuits.com
That board has a lot more info about fishing the sound than you will find here. I'll be out at Manchester on Sunday in a 21' Bayliner with Scotty downriggers and a Merc Kicker, if you are out there stop by and say Hi!

I'm out near the Duwamish head. I've tried the Harbor Island area, but caught nothing but some shakers and a ling, somewhere around 30-35 lb, and had to throw it back. Other than that, I've gone across the bay around Vashon/Bainbridge, and around where the Natives put their nets out. Caught a few keepers, but only about 1-2 per 5-10 trips. Considered actually robbing those nets...

Newbie.... if you want to learn to fish a body of water that you are not familiar, hire a guide for one day and ask a few questions but don't act like you are there to extract all his secrets Most of them will take you where the fish are, provide the tackle and bait and show you how to fish that area. That alone is worth the price. From day two and thereafter you will know a lot more than you do now. And I am sure you will increase your take home percentages.. Let us know how you do, I have been wanting to come up for a weekend trip and I love fishing the Sound.... Even a mixed bag is fun,

newbie- If you do try out a guide I would suggest Spottail Salmon guide out of Ballard. I see them out there a lot of the time when I am fishing and he always seems to put people on fish.
Also- what method have you been fishing?

I've been trolling small wobbling spoons behind a hot spot green/glow or in-line green/glow flasher. I've also caught a nice sized Blackmouth off of a large blue fox spinner.

Tried Bainbridge again...Nothing. Got a few shakers on a Coyote @ about 6am Sunday. After about a half hour, we didn't get a nip. We even had an underwater camera on it... Not a thing even went close. graemlins/dork.gif

Newbie, you need to head north. I have been fishing the bay for the last 9-10 weekends and have hit limits each trip EXCEPT for the last weekend. Fished it both days hard w/o anything to show for it. There was a derby held on sun and out of 50-60 anglers there were two fish turned in. One at 5lbs and one at 4.The fish have moved out. Good luck!
