Northwest Steelheaders 7th Annual Fishing Fundraiser
Northwest Steelheaders host Tillamook based event in support of progressive ODFW Native Broodstock programs
The Association of Northwest Steelheaders announces that it will be hosting its Annual Wilson and Nestucca River Broodstock Rodeo during the weekend of March 7th at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds. The Broodstock Rodeo is the name the steelheaders have given for this annual recreational fundraiser where anglers fish on North Coast streams, catch fish for the ODFW, and participate in activities like clinics and a BBQ. The Steelheaders have been holding this event on North Coast for the past 7 years to benefit a progressive Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) program that uses native steelhead broodstock to produce hatchery offspring. Over the years this program has allowed select Oregon hatcheries to improve broodstock so that steelhead are better adapted to local conditions and provide greater recreational benefits. Participants in the event receive special training and permits from ODFW that allow them to capture a very limited number of wild steelhead on behalf of the Department.
The Steelheader’s event began in 1996 as a way to safely capture fish for the inception of the Wilson River Broodstock program. This program has enabled the release of about 50,000 steelhead smolts per year on the Wilson River. Two to four years later these fish return to provide recreational fishing opportunities for Oregon anglers as well as economic benefits for North coast communities such as Tillamook. The Steelheaders and other angling organizations have also worked with the ODFW and the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation to establish similar programs for the Nestucca and Sandy Rivers.
In addition to capturing hatchery broodstock for the ODFW, the event will have angler activities including fishing clinics with leading North Coast guides, BBQ feast, door prizes, and a new Drift Fishing Poker Run. The event costs $90 for members and $100 for nonmembers. The entry fee includes food, lodging, door prizes, and an introductory membership for nonmembers.
The Association of Northwest Steelheaders is a volunteer-based 501-c3 non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing fish and their habitats for today and the future. The Association is involved in a wide range of community projects, such as habitat rehabilitation, stream restoration, angling facilities enhancements, scholarships, angling and outdoor education programs, and classroom incubation fish tanks. Anglers or press interested in further information on the event can contact the Association of Northwest Steelheaders office at (503) 653-4176 or Allen Flanagan at (503) 640 0142.
