Shut the boat off last night and watched a pod of Orcas between snatelim and onamack point. near Oak Harbor... They are beautiful creatures. Didnt catch any salmon, but did catch the biggest quillback Approx 5 pounds the thrill was I caught it on my steelhead spinning rod with 6 pound Izor line and a dart....quite the pull....DJ

I used to love watching the Orcas in Southeast Alaska. They were amazing. One of the many things I really miss about living up there... One day I am sure that I will move back!

Skein,
We know that area well. We fished it every August with Mike Robert, the inventor of the LuckyJig, until his death a couple of years ago.
We fish Port Renfrew now, not as far to go, but we miss it. The drop off where Blackfish hits Johnstone at Craycroft Is. is awsome for Lings and Yelloweyes and we've done great at Parsons for Halibut. Hum, maybe time to go back this year.

Jean,

I know you know the area well, I've been reading your very informative posts. I'd really like to visit with you sometime and hear some more of your yarns about the north island area.

We quit fishing one of our favorite lingcod holes because of the snappers there - and we decided long ago not to target a fish that took that long to mature. This guy was maybe 70 years old!

Let's get together one of these days. I'll bet we know some of the same people and lots of the same places. It's sort of a second home to us.

Maybe they will visit the nehalem again this year. There is a wonderful smorgasboard of fat little seals available. The Orca's cleaned them out pretty good a couple of years ago.   graemlins/applause.gif

I fish out of Port McNeil / Telegraph Cove up on Vancouver Island, and we get into whales almost everytime we go out - especially if we're fishing near where Blackfish Sound dumps into Johnstone Strait. Magnificent!

Catch some big lings and hali's too!
