When Sturgon fishing, does it matter, or is there a preference, to use male or female Smelt?

I like the big gooey females that are gushing eggs for bait, but either seems to work well.

Females, they seem to work better on my boat.

I used to think that the females were the best. Figured that those eggs were like candy to the sturgeon. After a couple of years, I think the eggs are only candy for the belly suckers that beat the sturgeon to your bait. Besides, by the time you squash your smelt before you cast it, most of the eggs squirt before it hits the water.

Use the females for sturgeon bait, them sturgeon love them eggs.
Use the males for smoking up.
The females got a softer meat and is not as good smoked, but the males are the good ones for smoking.
Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Went out this evening with the family behind the Texaco and dipped a limit. Lot of fish to be had.
This was my 2 y/o Son's first time and he loved to help. I got a real kick out of watching him and my Daughter handle the fish.

Don't waste those Smelt eggs on Sturgeon. I don't eat Smelt but those eggs are going on! On a little rice, wrapped in seaweed. Wasabi and Soy Sauce on the side.
Yum Yum!
