I will be down there for 4 days next week to do some crabbing, herring jigging (hopefully) and sturgeon fishing. I do lots of sturgeon fishing so I understand all of the tackle and bait tech etc. but I was hoping some of you fine people could divulge some general locations. I will probably launch up at Toledo.
So, I need some ideas on locations and what kind of depths I can expect to be fishing in, also things to watch out for such as shallows.

My e-mail is tanner@kennedyres.com

In advance, Thank You.

Hay bud, Headed up in the morning for a day of crabbing, jigging and sturgeon.
keep an eye on this post and I'll try to get back to you tomorrow night or early sunday morning.
Had an old timer go up today to get things dialed in so my hopes are up!!!

tides don't look good for the best of crabbing,or jigging but at least I can give you an idea on what's up.

Walleyed

And if anyone knows of the herring being any good speek up I've never done it befor and can't wait to give it a try.

Thanks Walleyed,

Anyone else, I'm not asking for your secret spots just general locations. In fact, I'll sweeten the deal. If someone gives me some good info and I score fish with it, I will take you fishing for natives steelhead in my driftboat on my home stream. Saturday, my 11 year old son and I hooked 8 and landed 4.
Out of 7 or 8 other boats we saw all day only a couple of them had caught fish.

So how about it?

I've caught a few fish on the yaquina in the last 3 years but sure haven't figured out any pattern or any real "honey holes". There isn't much out there deeper than 35' or so. I tend to fish the edges near the deeper spots so I can cast into various depths. Toledo is a good place to launch. I've only caught fish from about marker 31 up to the mill in toledo. Try below the bridge, below the boat works where the road heads up the hill, all around 38, and maybe out in front of the oyster farms. I've tried it down at 25 but the crab and mucats drove me back upstream. Lots of people fish for, and catch, sturgeon that low.

Watch the channel markers, there are some flats to avoid. Watched some guys plow across one below 38, horrible racket.

I prefer to use sand shrimp on a wire leader 18"- 24". If the yellow goo is gone from your shrimp it is no good-replace it and pay attention. I caught an 80"er that was giving me the tiniest little pull, big suprise when that one jumped! If fishing multiple rods, I'll always have a smelt out cuz ya never know. I think I've done better on the last couple hours of the out going through the ebb and maybe an hour or so on the incoming.

If you have really good electronics -like side finder maybe- you might be able to cruise around and find a school of them. Mine will only cover about 3-10' cone dia. at the depths over there, pretty hard to happen to ping one.

OK, that's just about everything I know about sturgeon on the Yaquina, except don't expect alot of action but the fish that are there are usually Dandys

Good luck
