How many of you anglers buy some type of fishing gear everytime you go to your favorite fishing store evev if you just go to browse? Do your spending habits relate to your salary, family size, bills, etc., or do you just go out and buy something wehn you need it regardless? I have a tough time not spending money when I go to my favorite fishing store whether it is something I need or not. I have a wife and two kids and live a comfortable life, but by no means make a lot of money. The best part if that my wife never gets mad when I go out and buy fishing gear. Please share.

I have an addiction for Corkies and lead. Every time I go I usually wind up buying these items everytime. Oh, one more thing... Now I'm also into yarn since I'm tying and using Rags. Just can't get enough of the stuff. :hoboy:

There is a direct correlation between what I buy and what TV fishinf show I just watched, seminar just went to, magazine just read, or thread on IFish.net I just viewed. I look like I am prepared for WWIII with all my stuff.

If I never bough another corkie, or pencil lead, and I live for another 20 years, I will still have a good supply left when I die! But the next time they are on sale I just know that I will buy more.

After my expeditures last year (I was re-entering the fishing addiction in the Fall) I try to budget what I buy and when. I was really surprised at how much I spent from September through November, so now I look for more sales and try to buy ahead on sale items. It's those unbudgeted rod and reel purchases that are going to get me in trouble!

I used to make quarterly trips to Vegas, fishing seems to be little cheaper. Than again, I haven't started buying Springer stuff yet. At least with fishing I remember what happened the night before and where all my money went. By the way, do they have fishing-anonymous?

Trent

PS I seem to do about as well fishing as I do on the crap table.

In the last 2 weeks I've bought 2 Rogue Rods, 2 ABU 6500 reels and 7 pkg of Puffballs so I'm probably ready for the 12 step program too.
Seriously though, I usually just look when I'm at the store, unless I pick up something small ($2-$3). For the good stuff I save a little each week, and hord what I call free money ( the $10 rebate from buying the new... the $5 from turning in the cans, cashing out my change bucket (wow, thats alot of change). Three or four months go by and you'd be surprised at the money in your "private account".
I'm like you though, my wife never gets upset about it (even bought my first driftboat for me. I was bummed that the one I went back to buy was sold until I got home and found it in my back yard).

There is just something about flatfish. I've got boxes of them and always seem to want just one more. They are so shiney / pretty /cool-color painted...I just can't get enough.

And, ya know, I only use about 2 favoriites. The others just look really neat in my tackle box.

Since measure 28, I now just accidently bump up against them so they'll fall on the floor. It gives me a few precious seconds of up-close-personal time with them as they are placed back on the shelf.

....ooohh and FMS has their own custom colors, too :depressed:

Mark, I tried the gum, it does work. I like the patch cause its clear and its not noticeable. I do like the gum just in case I'm at the local shop and I get that extra craving, I pop a piece in and oh boy, thank you.
 Baby steps, baby steps

Right after Christmas I was organizing ALL of my tackle/gear, and then it hit.....I have WAY TOO much stuff!! Not really though, but it's pretty crazy to see all that $$ sitting there in fishing goodies.

Hi, My name is Mojo, and I'm addicted to fishing gear. This weekend I bought a new Lamiglass rod, and a new flyrod. I know I have a problem. I realize it is destructive. BUT IT IS SOOOO FUN!!!

There is a reason my 1,900 pound boat weighs 47,000 pounds. No it's not the Moose Drool. It's the gear. Anytime you measure the corkies you are buying not by the dozen, but by the pound, you got a problem. I have two dry storage boxes in my boat filled with Kwikfish. My rod lockers won't hold another rod. I'm gonna have to buy a camper shell just to lock up all the "extra rods" and stuff that won't fit in my boat while fishing.

HELP ME!!!

Fishing gear fever, easy to catch and hard to kick. 12 step, patches and gum don't work on me. Only remedy is empty wallet.

Boat weighs so much less when gear is removed. Takes 5 trips to unload the stuff.

don't know what I'm doing with all of it. Don't know what Id do without it.

When I bought my first tackle box ( a medium sized one), I told myself that I could not buy more stuff than would fit into it. Yeah right. The mind is so clever. My box was soon bursting at the seams so I created an extra cardboard box for each fishing season. Ha ha.
Now when we switch from Springers to lake trolling the tackle box gets an overhaul. Every 12 step program has a flaw. Hey, its a harmless vice, isn't it?

Mojo, and I thought that I was the only one that bought corkies by the pound  No joke I do!

Attempting to stay out of divorce court there are times I just look. I go play with rob to much to spend every time. BUT boy I want to buy every trip. I shop and don't tell, am scared to add up how much I have invested in fishing. Have stuff that has never seen water and two bars of fishermans hand soap. You find the meeting I'll go but I'm not saying any thing that could be used against me. SS :hoboy:

If the wife knew how much money I really spend on fishing.... I'd be in some serious trouble. But yes, everytime I go to a hunting / fishing store I end up buying something!

I'd like to say you're all fools for buying what you clearly don't need... But unfortunately, I can't....... I buy only when I see something I either don't have, or don't have enough of, or THINK I don't have enough of.....

In other words, I see it, I buy it...... but then, I'm not married (anymore) and have no kids...... but I do have a limited income...... Wonder if there's a relationship between the two.....

I'm not sure a 12 step program, gum, or patch will help me...... and I'm not sure I need help...

I need to get busy and see what "sales" are onlinel

And where CAN I get corkie's by the pound? Just wonderin'......

All right, this has got to come to an end. Wendesday night at 8:00 pm we will be having a Fishing Equipment Freaks Annonymous (FEFA) meeting online in the ifish chatroom. I just dumped another $165.00 at Sportsmans today, (after the $245.00 on Saturday).

I need to get Richard Simmons to come and help us "STOP THE INSANITY!" :hoboy:

I trick myself into justifying more fishing equipment buy purchasing a new clear plano box whenever they go on sale. That way I can tell my wife that I don't have that much tackle-look at all these empty tackle holders!! GI Joes makes it really hard not to buy corkies at 15 for $1.(on sale price). I think I have close to 1000 corkies now.

Good question. I am pretty conservative in my purchases. What I do is keep a list of fishing tackle needs in my wallet. I add to the list at the time I remember that I need something. Then, when I find myself in a tackle shop - I try to LIMIT myself to one or two items on the list.

I have a couple of nice fly rods - but outside of that I have moderately priced tackle. A Lamiglas is one of my better gear rods.

I usually do not trade up until what I have is really limited (i.e., I am catching steelhead still with my Medalist and could use a decent fly reel) or worn out (i.e., I need new wading shoes). It is all about budget - 3 kids eating me out of house and home.

In the end, I still spend more than I should :hoboy: .

Oh, man!

I had held out here, thinking I could be "scientific" about it. I started a special category in Money 2003 for it, but after 77 hours of data entry I still wasn't done and the whole 'puter smoked! And that was the dual processor, 2.6 Gig Raid III box with the ultanium math co-processor!

Hmmmm... Is there a reason no one has actually tried to put a dollar amount answer to this question???

Case in point.......

Today, a fishin' buddy of mine called and said he was headin' to the Tri-Cities to get some tackle at Sportsman's Warehouse. He wanted to know if I wanted to go with him. graemlins/idea.gif

This thread brings to mind one of my favorite lines.....usually spoken by a newbee flyfisherman at a fly shop (no doubt to the joy of the salesperson working on commision), "WHAT ELSE DO I NEED? "

I am a firm believer that some lures catch fish, and some catch fishermen. I have a whole box of them that catch fishermen and a couple that catch fish. "Don't go to the light.... It's soooo beautiful"
