Noticed miss while running the big engine on my boat this weekend, time to yank the plugs, first time since I bought the boat (used) ... any recommendations on what type plugs to use on 115 HP Evinrude FICHT engine (2001)? and as long as we're chatting, anyone have any experiences with this brand/type of engine? So far I have been very pleased with it's performance but only had for one year. Would like to throw wrenches this week after work so I can be out on the channel Saturday and Sunday after springers. Thanks in advance.

I don’t know about your motor but here is a recent experience regarding spark plugs. Your owners manual will tell you what they recommend. Shop around and cross reference to different brands of plugs. I change my plugs every year or so. I went to Napa and said I need 6 of x brand. OK. $14.99. EACH! Whoa, I don’t think so. Head to the next store. $14.49 EACH! Then the guy behind the counter started cross referencing. $8.99 each, well that is bit better. Then he says how about $1.79? And I have them in stock. No need to special order. I say sure. So far the $1.79 plugs is working as well as the $14.99 plugs. Fuel consumption is the same, starting is the same. No difference as far as I can tell.

I use NGK plugs in my boat motors. I have used this brand for years in all my small
engines. I used to buy all my plugs from Marine supply stores (Harvey Marine for example). Boy what a waste of hard earned money that was. Harvey charges 5 bucks per plug NO MATTER WHAT THE APPLICATION. I change my plugs in the big motor 3 times a year and my trolling motor 2 times a year. Harveys doesnt get my business anymore when it comes to plugs. I get them at Nappa now and the same plugs cost me just 2 bucks each. Not too many Auto Supply stores carry a good selection of marine plugs but they can order them for you.

Just go to Joes and look in the book.
FICHT is German for ___________

Take this question to your Authorized Dealer.
Putting the wrong plugs on your motor can really cost you. I know of a motor right now that has a hole in the number 2 piston because of bad gas and a hot plug.
Don't make the same mistake. Get a service manual, it will pay for it's self over time.
I hope this helps...

you need to read up on your motor, the fichts sparkplugs are indexed and have to point the correct way when they are installed and not doing that could cause problems.

Waterdog, I ran across the same thing on my 2003 Merc 200 the plugs were almost $15.00 @
for NGK's....whats up with that?...emissions I guess..... it dosn't smoke like my '93 Merc 200 did...but it's NGK's were only $3.50@

Yeah mine is a 175 SJ and the NGK plugs are platinum that come with it. I went to an autolite plug. So far so good. I am watching it pretty closely tho. Like I said, I cant tell the difference in the way it runs at all.

I only use NGK in everything I own. My Merc uses surface-electrode plugs but I've never paid more than about $3.50 for them.
Some plugs (like Mazda rotaries) are application-specific and don't fit anything else. The less popular they are, the more $$.

not exactly the same but I'm curious...
marine plugs cost $5 each for my little kicker, and regular plugs, cross matched to be the same and properly gapped, cost $2 each. Why is that???
