My old humming bird is on it's last legs. Was thinking about purchasing one of the portable 'stick' style depth finders that run on regular 'C' batteries. ('Lil Buddy or Fishin' Buddy, I think.)
Any body out there ever use/own one of these ?
If so, what's your opinion?

Save your money. Those things work OK in a lake or on a drift boat in shallow water but the electronics are extremely sensitive to moisture if you know what I mean.

I have seen some great little portable fishfinders put together out of inexpensive Humminbirds. Alligator clips to the battery and you are ready to go.

I used to use one while ice fishing, but other than that it was useless.
I've got an Eagle portable that carries two 6v lantern batteries in the base and has a suction cup transducer. I don't have 12v power in my boat so it's ideal for my situation. The batteries last about a year if I use Duracells. Less with other brands.

HI brushpuppy,

I have one of them fishin buddy's. It's the 1250 model. It runs on 3 C batteries and ususally lasts a year. I use if mostly for the bays when laying traps or out on the big rivers. It is current sensitive meaning it will give you false reading when your on the go on your boat. Once you get used to it it is a great tool. For me and my driftboat it works great.
