Public review of draft Hatchery Management Policy begins
PORTLAND - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will re-initiate development of a new Hatchery Management Policy with a public workshop meeting Monday, Jan. 27. The meeting is scheduled 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at ODFW's Portland headquarters and is open to the public.
ODFW wrote a draft Hatchery Management Policy in late 2001 and presented it to the agency's governing board, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, in December, 2001. Public testimony that criticized the lack of public review for the hatchery policy and the companion Native Fish Conservation Policy led the Commission to temporarily shelve the project. In 2002, the Commission adopted a new Native Fish Conservation Policy after a task force spent several months re-working it with ODFW staff.
The Jan. 27 workshop will begin discussions using the draft Hatchery Management Policy dated Dec. 14, 2001. The draft is posted to the ODFW Web site along with several related documents: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/InfoCntrFish/nfcp_hmp.htm .
The working group will meet again Feb. 27. The Commission will review the draft policy April 11 and is expected to adopt the final Hatchery Management Policy later this spring.
The workshops will be held in the second floor Commission Room, ODFW Headquarters, 2501 S.W. 1st Ave., Portland. For more information, contact George Nandor, (503) 872-5252 Ext. 5419 or george.f.nandor@state.or.us .
