First off;
In order to qualify for this event by the rules you needed to have at least 2 i-fishers on your team, post results "AND PICTURES" by 9;00 PM Sunday the 12th.

I do understand that some of you lost, forgot and or left behind your cameras, and some others lost your team, had team no shows or cant get in touch with them to post pictures, but the rules are rules so this is the way it stands in accordance with the rules.

I am sorry to those that this leaves out but I need to follow the rules that started this event. I hope you can understand this.

By all means if I messed up and you had all of the qualifications and I missed it, left you out, or have the number of fishers or fish caught wrong, please let me know where to find your "unedited post" and I will fix this a.s.a.p.

I hope you all had a great time and met some new friends.

O.K. now down to business.

We may have only came in third place but we had first-place laughs on our trip. It's too bad we couldn't scare more fish up, but that's life.

When I say "scare more fish up", I'm quite serious. There's something that's been bothering me since yesterday and I need to talk about it. I'm going to let something major out of the hat here but I feel that it needs to be done:

We didn't hook either of those fish.

I know, this is going to be huge, but I just cannot live with myself knowing that we didn't do all of this on the up-and-up. The truth is, Chris spotted these two fish finning in a tailout and pointed them out to us as we were going to drift right over them. Interested, I peered over the side of the boat to look at them, and the next thing you know those two fish did what I could only compare to as a fish scream and then were bellied up and drifting downstream, twitching. Luckily they then came to rest in some backwater and, even luckier, they were hatchery fish, so we pulled their lifeless bodies into the boat and tagged them.

I'm still not quite sure what scared them. Chris had me look straight ahead the rest of the trip, which probably was to keep the boat tracking straight but he mentioned something about "saving the native stock"(?), whatever that means. Must be boat slang.

Anyway, I do feel better after admitting to this. Hopefully my boat mates will understand that this needed to be said. This should not say anything bad about Chris' skills as a guide, as he worked his backside off (or it was jarred off in Carver trying to come down the mud bank after the restroom stop, I don't recall). It just wasn't in the cards for us to catch fish the conventional way, I guess.

Hopefully this won't make too many people upset or, worse, start up a new ethics thread on iFish. These were hatchery fish and were meant to be harvested.

Hopefully the cardiac arrest doesn't make the fish taste funny.

Heck Dan,

Not to be a spoilsport, but I thought we wern't supposed to kill or overstress fish (released) to take pictures. Seems that there was some discussion about that.

You said:

"RichH

I think one picture will be plenty, maybe an end of day picture. If you want more thats cool, but I don't want everyone posting 10 pictures. I think it would be to much for the server to handle. I will take anyone's word on fish released.

Fishing Geek, what are you saying - that technically you didn't catch those fish (not on line and hook) and belong in the 0 fish category? Does this mean you rightfully need to be in the baton poll too???? MADWIZ??

the discussion of stress on the native was about measuring them so we throw that out.

My quote
"I think one picture will be plenty" any team that posted 1 picture in the standings and followed rule number 5. Notice the (and picture)

Rule #5
"You can fish any river those 2 days that you want in Oregon or Washington, but must post results and pictures by that Sunday the 12th by 9:00p.m. to qualify."

If I took results I can guaranty you some people would have won without hooking a fish that day. Some people have 14 fish days all the time with no pictures. We had to keep it at least 1 picture as proof as in the rules. I know I can trust you and if you say your team had 2 I believe you. I am sorry and apologize to you and whoever else feel cheated but after some emails from people bringing this point up to me about rule number 5 I fell I need to stand behind the rules.

Hey hey hey here!

Let's not be so competitive about this! There will only one baton holder at the end of all this after all. And that has nothing to do with retention or photos since they will not have caught anything anyway.

For what it is worth, in future events where there is no "prize" for actually winning, I believe that the principle of honesty should be good enough. As long as at least one other person will verify that a catch was made, regardless of whether they are a team member, it should stand without requiring photos. Some people still don't own digital cameras, and some will not want to overly stress fish, or some (like ours) will not turn out because of low-light and/or a thumb on the lens.

If there were a prize, like the ifish springer contest, then absolutely verification is in order.

Another thing that I would like to suggest in future events is that the teams be comprised of at least one ifisher that doesn't know another ifisher. By the comments I have seen on the board, it seems that is what many people really enjoyed was the opportunity to get to know somebody new.

Wiz, you worked long and hard on this and my hat is off to you, but don't be too grumpy. I understand your point about this contest, my suggestions are for future events.

Madwizerd,
Thank you for all of you efforts in putting the challange together. It was a fun weekend of fishing with IFISH. Also thank you for letting me have the unlucky number #13 for my team... I know that was a fearful number that nobody wanted to have on their team... But I took the heat....We had a great day on Saturday.

Hey Mad- Not that it makes a big dif. Team "Purple Shlurple" had one fish(see pic on Jennie's "Wilson Report" thread. Jim(AtWorkAlot) and myself had a great day. There were alot of friendly fishermen on the Wilson Saturday even with the crowd.

Well next time your gonna have to figure out something about that.

I have never posted a picture of a unclipped fish released that hasn't gotten critized by the peanut gallery for "improper handeling". Sturgon, salmon, or steelhead. Ditto a buncha others, yourself included.

I personally am going to be very wary about posting any more pictures of native fish released on Ifish for this reason.

The sad reality (for me) is that if it isn't dead it probably isn't going to get its picture posted in the future.

I realize your in a no win situation here, and I really don't care all that much, but saying now that you had to post a fish picture to qualify might be seen by some as stretching your own rules after the fact.

I'm very happy w/ unofficial #3. Same concerns as UG though. We got all nates and I didn't take a picture of any of them. I've got pictures of me fighting fish, and of the river and one of a sort of silver flash as the fish came to the boat, but not pics of the fish. I really don't like stressing them out any more than I have to, so as soon as I can I pop the hook. No net, no out of the water and no picture. I don't have any problem with the rules for this tournament or how it panned out for us though. It was just a good excuse to go out fishing and have some fun. Thanks for putting it on.

TFG, are you kidding? if not thanks for fessing up. but i have a hard time buying that one. anyway you guys just netted them? wow those fish looked nice.

Dan Christopher
01-13-2003, 10:56 AM
The way I thought the rule was written was you dont have to post PICS ,they would be nice but not mandatory, but as it was pointed out to me though e mail that is not the way I wrote it. If I change the rules now then I would have to change them to let the people that fished by them self in, didn't fish with I fishers in, posted late or even next week. where do I draw the line? So I draw the line at the original rules even though some of them were not the best, but it is all I can do this late in the game. I to do not take nate PICS often for the same reasons you guys have mentioned above.

All of us know where we should had been in the standings and by all means you are right. But I made the rules so I need to stand by them. Remember this was all in fun and the only true reward is the baton. The people that posted fish caught but no PICS are not in the running for the baton so it cant be that bad.

This was my first organization of a big event and I am sorry if I blow it for some of you but if we learn from are mistakes the next one will be better, right.

I agree with hog that the next one should not have pictures mandatory as I didn't think I made then mandatory on this one either. I also think you should have to fish with I fishers that you haven't fished with before, that was my hole purpose for this event, even though in some cases it didn't work out that way.

This is the first steelhead challenge and some things went wrong and that is my fault for not clarifying things better and having some bad rules and I am sorry for that but there is nothing I can do about it after the fact without making a lot of others mad. I cant win either way. If you want to do a Thread about changing this rule after the fact with other challenge fishers stating there opinion that is fine with me. If the people want it changed now I will do it.

All I can say is I tried to host a great event and for all intensive purposes it think it can off great, but once again I am sorry if I blow it for some of you. Please don't stay p'o ed at me for to long. :depressed: :depressed: :depressed:

MADWIZ, first event or not, you did a great job either way and my hats off to you for taking it on. Doesn't matter to me that our team came home fishless, we had a great time with a great group of teams and that's all that matters.

Might want to clarify that "loophole" for us though that allows someone (TFG and team) to scoop their fish up in a net instead of by hook and line and enter their fish! I don't remember seeing that rule!  At least they fessed up to it!

Welcome to the world of "officiating"

As a sports official, I have come to understand that on every call made, I can, at best, be only 50% correct. You can never please every one.

You did an outstanding job!!!!! graemlins/applause.gif graemlins/applause.gif

I had a great time, Learned tons including new water and would love to do it again. I do like making it a rule that teams MUST be comprised of at least one Ifisher that you have not fished with previously. With 4000 members, that should not be a difficult task and it furthers the goal Jeanie started with.

Again, Thanks WIZ!

Wiz, I hope you don't dwell on any negative points brought up. Mistakes and/or misinterpretations are part of life. This event, based on my own experience with Team Moose Drool, as well as experiences described by others, point out that this challenge was clearly a "Win/Win" success for all who participated. I sincerely appreciate everything you did to pull this event off. graemlins/applause.gif  graemlins/applause.gif

There also were no losers. If anything, all that is left are those who, for whatever reason, did not get to participate. I think that many of them, after reading the various associated threads related to this event, will also become winners as they sign up for future challenge.

We have all learned from this event, and the sturgeon challenge, and I have confidence that future events will greatly benefit from leasons learned.

Thanks to you all for letting me be a part of this. graemlins/applause.gif

You did a great job MadWizerd. I had a blast. First place or last place. It wouldn't have mattered. I got to spend Saturday with three other ifishers(Talons, Fish Hunter, and Slow Roll). We got into some fish, but more important is that I made some new friends. How can anyone lose on a day like that?

Anyone with a beef is overlooking the whole spirit of the event. There was not $10,000 on the line, just an opportunity for new friendships to be made.

Thanks again MW.

For all the Monday morning quarterbacks out there, the Wiz posted the official results. It's over. Thank him for the good event and think about the next one. Let's not post any negative comments or re reading the rules. :

Now that this event is over, I am thinking of organizing " F.4 , part duce" .

So Dr. Stranglove, you will need to return that rod you won last year so we can let next years winner have it for a year...

And again to Wiz...YOU DID A GREAT JOB !

Awww man!!!!!! Now I'm really bummed. My team showed up Sunday and we managed 3 in the boat, that would have certainly put us in the running. I got home sunday and my wife informed me our computer had gone south and she was trying to recover it.

Oh well, nice to know some fish were being caught. I got to take home a nice hatchery hen with those funny little bugs attached near her vent fin.
