I would like to go to BC this summer for a 5 day fishing weekend...I have a trailerable offshore boat so I will drive....looking at a map I see all the usual spots you read about like Campbell River etc...however, for wide open fishing I don't have a clue where to go.....or which areas are better than others???
Primarily I am interested in Chinook fishing....halibut, silvers etc would be nice but not essential.
Thanks for any help!

Ucluelet on Vancouver Island fills all your saltwater fishing needs. I've had some very good times fishing the Barkley Sound area and offshore. Here's the resort where I usually stay.

I am headed to port hard north end of the island in august. You better make them arrangements soon as they fill up quick.

Look up www.bigpacific.com. (http://www.bigpacific.com.) There are a number of resorts and marinas and campgrounds. If you look at the map you will see that its a ways south of Campbell River and a lot less crowded. There is plenty of fishing around Jarvis inlet with salmon, halibut, lings and rockfish, and shrimp and crabs and oysters.Another big plus is the ferry ride is a lot less and you only pay one way, return is included in fare.Look at all the sites and I think you will find one that fits. I like the one for Lowes, it has a lot to offer. Propwash

I've fished the Ucluelet area 1/2 dozen times and I've always went with Canadian Princess Resort through Oak Bay Marine Group. Their website is: www.obmg.com. (http://www.obmg.com.)
They are the ones who always publish the specials in the Oregonian Sports Page and You can usually book a 3 day trip including airfare from Vancouver, BC and good accommodations (always ask to stay on shore - the ship accommodations are a bit cramped for most people) for about $300 per person. That's the early (May) price but we've always conked the fish. That price includes (2) 7 hour salmon fishing trips on a 40' boat, cleaning of your fish, airfare and hotel. You just pay for food. I always bring my own Halibut pole and bait and fish for Halibut on the salmon trips and have always done well on both Halibut and salmon. They do separate Halibut and bottomfishing trips too.

ES,
There was another post regarding this back at the end of December. Here's the link:

If you're interested in the sites as well as fishing then I recommed Desolation Sound near Campbell River, BC. There are tons of books on the area and me/family spent 10 days up there last year. Absolutely awesome place. I only fished for salmon 1/2 day but managed to only hook 1 nook. I did hook many huge lings. We collected tons of clams and oysters in the bays. It was great.
If you want anymore info send me an email.

One piece of advice from a Canuck who knows all the spots mentioned well.
http://www.bigpacific.com has lots of info on the Sunshine Coast-a beautiful area.
However this past decade Salmon have more or less deserted the Inside-very few fish to be caught no matter what some commercial guide/campground operator tells you.
Also-Bottomfish populations in the area have collapsed and are for all intents and purposes closed-there haven't been Halibut in any numbers on the Inside in living memory.
Any of the WCVI-West Coast Vancouver Island destinations have produced steadily all season and Port Hardy had a great season last year-just when I wasn't able to make it  .
http://www.duvalpointlodge.com is a great bargain if you like do-it-yourself outfits.

I have been fishing out of Ucluelet for 14 years I go the last week off August and I stay at Islands West Resort (250-726-7515) they have camp sites Lodging and morage the morage fills up fast. The last two weeks of August have been the best. If you want Chinook, when you come out past the lighthouse hang a right and run up the shore around 4 miles ( stay about 1/4 mile offshore, this will keep you away from the rocks). There are a few spots to fish. First Point, Eagles Nest, The Wall, Wya Pt, The Grape Fruit and Walter Rock. These are spread out for the next mile. There are two ways to fish up there, Motor Mooch ( As many rods as you can Handle) or troll Anchovys behind a Hot Spot Flasher with down riggers run the rig 30ft behind the ball (use 15 lb balls). This way catches more fish. The water is only 30 to 60 ft deep most of the time u keep one set at 30 and work the other thru the column where u see fish on the finder. It was great in the early 90 the limit was 4 fish per day we carried 2 coolers in the boat for 4 of us.

Several years ago we tool our 20' Duckworth jetsled up to Haggards Cove Resort. We put in at Port Alberni in B.C. and then motored several miles in protected waters to Haggards Cove.
Their number is 250 723-8457. Ron Clark is the owner.
They had an excellent deal for $395 per person when you bring your own boat. This included 4 days and 3 nights. Included moorage, lodging, meals & drinks, fish care & packaging.
It is downrigger fishing using flashers and hootchies. No bait was required and we probably caught 50 to 60 salmon between three of us.
It was a great trip and the other highlight was the food and cooking. The meals were amazing!!!!!!!!!
A great all round trip. I would recommend it!

Also,
Haggards cove is in the Barkley Sound on the West side of Vancouver Island.
