Smok'in That's how I'd discribe this fish........

Hey guys the bar is now set. I fished hard all day and this fish was taken with just minutes left in the day.

21pounds 8 ounces and a brute. Full chromer, probaby a four salt fish. Left ventrical and adipose clip. It was actually pretty humorous all the people coming over to witness that it was really a hatchery fish cause of it's size they thought it was probably a native. I even held off with the net after it came to the boat the first time cause it was so stinkin big I thought it must have been a nate too. Then it kind a rolled a little I saw the clip and started really getting excited!!!! After two more powerful runs (about 25-30mins.)and a couple tenative attempts to net him I finally got it to the boat and netted. Holy cow pies!! This is the biggest steelhead I've ever caught. Ya know I think this is even the biggest I have ever seen in person even!!!

I had the fish on three different scales and got three different weights but I am goig to use the middle weight One just less than 20, one just over 22 #s and the newest cleanest digital scale at 21# 8 oz...

A couple of local guides and Ron verified that this fish was a Wilson River broodstock Stray visiting on the Mighty YUI&#@7? River. He was caught on a size 30 Red tiger and silver Hot Shot mainlined with trilene 14# test and based on a Abu Garcia 6501 and a 8'6" Lamiglass A2.

I have to say that I have not fished my river with so many people on it. I had to que up at 1st bridge for 20 minutes and have never experenced that before over here. Although there were a lot of boats on the river everyone seemed good natured and happy to be on the water. Though at the take out I had only heard that two other fish had been caught. I can only assume that the fish had there heads down during the high water and are all ready in the tributaries. I fished hard and long yesterday and was truely suprised that there wasn't more action. Oh well that's why they call it fishin huh.....

But enough said. Guess I got braggin rights for a while here, don't I.........

John,

That was one heck of a fish. I'm glad i was there to see all that transpire. The look on that young ladies face(your daughter correct) is what makes fishing so much fun.

You definately set the bar up there on that one. Somethings are just meant to be, you couldn't of had a better scenario. First fish of the day if i'm correct, just before you were to call it quits.

If you ever needs someone to tag along on a trip, just drop me a line.

Thanks, Geoff

I look foreward to seeing the pics! You deserve the brag... by the way, you spell the name of that river N E S T U C C A, not "YUI&#@7?" or "N3djkkca".

Good Job John! I heard about it too. I'd venture to say it's more likely a Siletz broodstock fish over the Wilson since the Siletz brood are raised there at YUI&#@7? Hatchery...Oh, I mean Cedar Creek.

Now do you believe in broodstock programs???

John,

Nice fish. Way to go!!! I disagree with Marty. Without a doubt, it is a stray Wilson River Brood fish. We caught quite a few of them on the Stucca last year ( 9 in my boat marked AD LV). The Siletz fish are marked Adipose Maxilary. The Wilson fish are marked Ad LV. My Boat got one last year off the Wilson marked the same way that was 20 1/2 pounds. Fish of a life time, but hopefully with the broodstock programs going on this will become far more common.

Way to go John!

Congrats to Toblerone. too bad you couldnt take the photos before it rigamortified. what were the measurements of that bad boy?

broodstock rules. i have caught a few but not as big as yours. thanks to the fellas that catch those natives and bring them to the hatchery. are all broodstock caught by anglers or do they get the natives another way?

FIL

Most of the fish for the Wilson and Nestucca Broodstock programs are caught by anglers. The Siletz fish are taken at the falls fish trap. I know that some (a very small number maybe 5 fish last year) for the Wilson program are taken at the South fork ( Prison camp) fish trap. I am not sure about all the Nestucca fish some may come from returning wild fish to the 3 rivers trap, but I know most are caught by anglers like Marty.

I believe, that ones we get returns from these broodstock programs that have been clipped correctly, we will see a good number of large returning broodstock fish to these rivers. The first two years of the Wilson broodstock program the prisoners clipped the fish for release. They found out after releasing the second years fish that in fact most of the fish had not been clipped at all or correctly. So it has taken a longer period of time to start seeing results. We have seen some return like the one John caught here and the story Travis ( Fins, F & F) told last week of getting a very large Wilson fish that was missing only its LV.

I will say that its an awsome feeling to see one of these fish caught and to know that you may have caught its parents, put it in the Broodstock program and that maybe why someone got to tell this story. There are many people that have worked very hard to make this happen and with luck fish like this are just the start. Support or Broodstock Programs then enjoy the results

this fish was not in stiff rigamortius when these photos were taken. It was just so big that it bent while trying to take a photo. I have other better photos that I'll get here when I figure this posting photo thing..
It was really an amazinly large fish.

Good job John! I am also in search of the 20 pounder.

I must say though, I also put in at first bridge and have never seen so many boats...many being uncourteous. People casting over my plugs and divers all day, pulling in front of me half way down a plug slot. And to top it all off some yay-hoo let his plugs out right in front of me while I was on anchor holding my bobber rod about ready to cast!
I realize it was a busy river and you can't have a hole all to yourself for very long...but come on! Sorry for the vent.

That is one big fish. Glad to hear someone landed a big one this weekend. Way to go!

Big Willie,

we had the same headaches a couple weeks ago. I don't know if these folks are uneducated on ettiquette, or just plain rude. E-mail me, and I will give you my 2 cents worth of free advice.
