My abu garcia levelwind has a really bad drag ( pretty much non-existant) a friend recommended replacing the drag washers. I purchased some and ready to install.
I seem to recall reading in a STS article that you must soak them in oil. Is this correct?
I can't seem to find the article and dont want to mess the new ones up
Thanks for the help

Wally, you do not grease ABU/Garcia drag washers. Shimano yes, ABU no.

I agree with Keta and Spooled, never grease the drag washers for an ABU baitcaster. Make sure that when you are done fishing that you back off the drag completely, doing this will increase the life of the new washers. When you do replace the washers take a few extra minutes and give the reel a cleaning. Q-tip and some oil will clean out most all of any dirt or old grease. Remember that when re-oiling a drop or two is plenty; too much oil is not good as it slows down the casting function of the reel. Hope this helps. Cheers.......

Don't put anyting on the drag washers. I think only some of the Shimano reels require a special lubricant.
Call Ollie Damon to be sure.

You can also go to the ABU web site for some good info, they also show a very detailed schematic for all of their reels too include part numbers
