What is the difference between leader and line, besides price? For instance, why does 25 yds of fluorocarbon leader from a company cost $8, while 250 yds of fluorocarbon line from the same company cost $12?
Anybody know what the difference is, or is it just marketing?

I'd guess packaging cost and greed if the product is the same.

You got it! Smaller spool = Big rip off!
I don't have room in my tackle box for full size spools, so I kept some small spools and now refill them from bulk spools.

Good idea on keeping the "small" spools!

I also keep the bigger ones so if I off load a reel I can save the line (15lb and 20lb Maxima UG is spendy).

The cost of the actual product has become minimal. It is the cost of labor ( health ins., unions, minimums, paperwork) and shipping costs that contributes 60-80 % of the cost of manufacturing. In many industries it is more cost effective to dump an allegedly defective product in the field rather that have it sent back and deal with it. A typical cost for someone to leave a production line to do another task can be $100.
I'm willing to guess that it took a second or two for the machinery to produce 25 yds vs 250 yds of that line.
So, it doesn't cost more to put a dozen of one item or another in a box and ship it. It just the cost of shipping a dozen items.
The cost of shipping 1 lb vs 10 lbs is not that great, the cost of doing it is where it's at.
This lack of understanding of "what it costs" is why many businesses struggle or are not around anymore.
Why is Costco around?
Just my .02.

I always thought that leader has a smaller diameter verses line of the some lb. I could be wrong....it wouldnt be the first time
