View Full Version : Acceptable use... Profanity on ifish

Jennie@ifish

I have been getting complaints about people getting around profanity by mispelling on purpose. I do believe that the masses agree with me here.
I made the rules on purpose.
They state:

The following types of content may result in a revocation of membership and banning

Inflammatory posts are not permitted. A post, or statement in a post, which serves only to fire up negative emotions or generate anger will be considered inflammatory and will be edited or deleted at the discretion of the moderators. Multiple offenses of this nature will result in banning.

...and here is the main point...
Profanity. A wide variety of people read the Ifish bulletin board, including elementary school children. Many of us use salty language while we are out fishing, but on the Bulletin Board we don't know everyone we're speaking with. Be creative enough to get your point across without being offensive.

Inappropriately suggestive or off color comments are unacceptable. Just as with profanity, there are a wide variety of people who read the Ifish Bulletin Board.
-----
I have been sliding on allowing use of profanity and I intend to start cleaning up the board again.

I just simply don't like it, nor feel it is necessary. It's my website. So please, calm the language, and try to not get bleeped. It's really quite easy, and it's not up for debate.

There is a very fine line where adult humor may pass over the head of others, and on occasion that will be giggled at and left be, but it must be done with a touch of class, k?

Thanks,
Jen

I could keep busy for days cleaning up some of the tasteless comments made in the past couple of days, but I'm just going to start fresh.
Know that offensive sexual comments will be edited out in the future.
Make my job easier, OK? Just e mail private jokes to your friends and I'll have more time to heal faster.

Well said Jen.....lets all get back to what we came to ifish for.....to tell where we're going fishing, where we've been fishing, how we did fishing and how we did it. And to meet other people who love to fish as much as we do.
Watching everyone beat each other up over their politcal views is not what I came here for.

I also am in agreement with KIng13fisher. We can to this website for fishing related info. Both to aquire and share, not to argue. Of course we all have different opinions and techneques on how to fish. No one is right or wrong because of the way they do it. Let's all get back to the basics and talk about fishing in a NICE way.

Your profanity policy has my vote. That kind of language is not needed and i could be one of the worst if we could get away with it. So keep the posts clean and none of this attacking someone just because they may make some dumb comments or brag a little. Stuff like, "Waterdog Eats Carp" now thats ok.ha ha ha

The past month has been mighty stressful, with the budget crisis, record runs of lockjaw fish, and record amounts of people chasing them. Stress level will just get worse with the upcoming elections and tidewater salmon fishing. Everyone needs to think before they post, simple as that.

I admit, I've been guilty of that "intentional misspelling" a few times..... :depressed:

I am guilty of it too.
It's not only because of what it looks like, it just seems that also, the board is easier to moderate if we cut some of the.... stuff.
Lots less hurt feelings, etc.
No one likes to edit stuff. It's not a fun job, and it leads to more and more work.
Now.... If I could only find a cure for work....

I can do that!

Today, I am feeling very  that my eye surgery is healing better.
However, I am  about the hatchery future problems that we face.
It makes me very  that we have to go over and over this.
I just have to  .
Sometimes I want to call some politicians and say graemlins/berry.gif .
However, with all of us together, we can beat the odds. I really do appreciate and feel very graemlins/hearton.gif to all of the people who are helping our cause.
I am beginning to feel very  again, so now I will let you go.
Thank you for understanding my emoticons.

Thank You Jen. I read almost every post and will be happy with things cleaned up a bit.

I agree with King13fisher stuff about fishing is why I came to ifish.

I would hope that we can as a group work for the good of the sport we all love. Fishing is a life long journey. Make the best of it.

Thanks Jennie for the clean board. In stark contrast to the wars I've experienced over the years in other forums.

From what I've seen in about a month in here does not appear to be overly PC. Hope not. Don't want to get slapped down if I inadvertently use the generic "fisherman" or forget and say "sqawfish".

Thanks Jen for the effort to keep it clean! Let's keep it clean on the rivers around the kids. Sure enough, on Saturday, I was at PC, with my friend's third grade boy who has leukemia, and the potty mouths had no respect. Come on now, the boy is on chemo fighting for his life, and people have to say every off color word on the planet, and tell such awful gross stories around us. Can't you think and have some respect? Let's have the same respect for kids on this bulletin board and in real life. I'm sorry, but PLEASE if kids are present, tone it down and have class!

SKP - most places that are for adults only have signs so that we do not take our children there. A few don't. PC is such a place. If you take a young person to PC during fall season expect that child to get an earful. No amount of wishful thinking will change that.

The Pope would get an earful at PC!

As ifish grows, if you want it to be a fun place to still visit, please help out by leaving potty humor, misspelled profanity, blatant profanity, sexual stories, and advertising out of it.

I thought I'd bring this post back up as a reminder. I guess I have to do this about every 6 months or so.

If I am to continue to monitor this board, which is taking an ever increasing amount of time for me, and the mods, than you all have to help out.

This is your board... Let's make it easy on all of us.

If you are upset with someone, e mail them. Leave it off of the board.

I would rather close the ifish discussion board than to let it lose it's class. Really, I would! And really, I will! I am a sort of perfectionist, and I prefer quality over quantity.

I am going to have to start hitting the delete and edit button more often, and that's no fun for you or for me, or for the mods.

I just got a letter from registration from a lady who teaches a disabled class. She uses ifish as an example of how people communicate effectively. That is the example I'd like for us to set! I was moved and touched that she felt that we were a good example! Let's keep her opinion positive!

OK, off my soapbox.
Over, and out.
....and I still love you all, no matter what! graemlins/hearton.gif

Jen, thanks for bringing this back up, it really has been a challenge lately ... if the community can't largely self-moderate, there's no way we can keep up.

Wow! That is very impressive if they are using this site as effective communication. I think all in all we try not to call someone on something we disagree with and just let it slide. It would just be a bickering website then that none of us would like to come to.
Everyone has an opinion...... but let all of us respect each others.

For the record, the vast majority have no problem posting within the acceptable use policy. Even most disagreements are civil. I applaud your maturity and ability to step away from the keyboard when someone pushes your button.

There are few posts, comparitively, that are over the line as to profanity or potty humor and most of those are inadvertent slips by people who do not know the rules....yet.

Thank you...the majority...for making this board what it is and for alerting us when we need to take action to keep the board a sane and safe place to visit.

I salute you. graemlins/applause.gif

Jen; This is two of the many things I like about ifish. Not having to read the potty stuff and being able to post a reply or question without fear of being jumped on.

I have been guilty of "piling on" a couple times in my early days and regret that however I am learning. I am sorry for these poor manners and will strive to be a good contributing member of this group.

This is the first (and only) board that I am active on and I just love it.

I have learned much.

Thanks,
Hog

All the members did not respond to this post but it would be my guess that the majority of the members agree with the policy.
When i see some of that stuff on the board it makes me want to punch the snitch button and report it to a mod. It does seem that there are times when there is a lot of it going on. Should we as members monitor and turn a post in as offensive or just let the mods catch it? Maybe Jen should do a pole on "to snitch or not to snitch".

Yes! Please do snitch, and snitch often!
There is no way I can read all of this board, and when I come upon a new member describing disgusting bodily functions, and the post has been up an entire day, I get sick!
Please, help me out here!
I got over potty humor when I was a small child. It was funny then, but it is not funny to me now. It's gross!
If any of you feel the need to describe yourself vomiting or going to the bathroom, please do it via e mail. You may or may not disagree, but this is one standard I'm not budging on!
It will be quickly "wiped" away, regardless of how good the writing may be!!
This does not mean I do not welcome the new members, only that we differ in what we find acceptable here.
I'd expect a story like that, while out fishing with the guys, and I could express my displeasure then, but not in public, come on!!!

Jen
