First I must send an apology to a few IFISH members (I.E. Thumper, Pete, brshooter, Mad Mikey, etc) especially Keta.....Please remove the stink!! I did not respond in a timely matter to a request that was made of me last week for a story. To those of you who responded back to my question on river conditions I am just now hitting the web again and did not receive all of the replys until today!! I decided to come back anyways and fish. Due to the rain I did not do any steelie fishing but went after Sturgeon instead. Only a few shakers if you are wondering.

Anyways.........I owe a story!! Of the many that I have I figure this one might give you a laugh.

About 10 years ago when I just started to date the lady who is now my wife, I asked my future father in law if I could borrow his boat. Although it was nothing fancy it was a brand new 18' Klamath with a 40 horse Mercury. He probaly had it out on the lake 5 times. Although I think that he wanted to say NO deep down inside, he let me use the boat anyways. He left very detailed instructions with my future mother in law on the usage of his new boat (How to-back it up, unload it, start it, heck even how to drive the darn thing). Being the young buck that I was I didn't need any instructions on how to use a boat. After all by age 20 don't you know everything that there is to know in the world? I left for the lake with the boys laughing at the fact that my future in laws did not think that I could launch a boat without detailed instructions. When we arrived at the lake I did the normal prep work that needed to be done so that we could go fishing. When I started to back that boat down the ramp is when everything went wrong!! Here was the problem I had never used an EZ loader trailer before and was not aware that the boat was on wheels instead of the normal carpeted 2X4's. The boat was disconnected from the trailer and my buddy was holding on to the only line connected to the boat. As I looked on in complete shock  I saw that the boat was going in reverse faster than I was!!! Unfortunately my first instict was to hit the brakes which sent the boat going even faster. Luckily my buddy let go of the rope or he would be fishing with one arm today. Besides for everyone on the ramp busting a gut at my misfortune I had to replace a $150 prop, do some grinding on the damaged aluminum, and admit to my future wife and in laws that I did not know everything and that I had screwed up. As I grow older I become smarter and listen to those older than me!!! graemlins/dork.gif

Great memory! I remember watching a cocky son-in-law-to-be back his fiance's father's trailer and truck completely under water one day. The boat floated off the trailer, though still tied to it. All you could see was a boat tied to something making a lot of bubbles. Divers and a wrecker had to rescue it. I don't know *who* rescued the young man - who got older by the minute.

Maybe you were lucky.

Welcome aboard!

Great story Pineapple! Thank you for the chuckle.
I always seem to forget something at the put-in. It's a good thing that my brain is attached.

Welcome!

Great story. Boat ramps are always good entertainment. Funny how we all knew everything there was to know when we were 20 (I'm 45). If I put myself in your father in law's place, I'd figure since you were so straight up about it afterwards that you were a pretty responsible 20 year old.

Pineapple,

Good story. You can probably tell by my moniker, I had a similar experience graemlins/dork.gif . The differences were:

I was much older, it was a fiberglass boat and the buddy  is the one to unhook everything.

Lesson, always unhook everything YOURSELF!

Similiar story here -
First time launching a 26 Reinell at Mukelteo (worst launch in Washington). We unhook everything and proceed down the launch, boat starts to roll and fortunately my buddy spots it and does not hit brake but speeds up. Boat hits water at mach 1. Short rope and me with heels dug in. Boat stopped when I hit belly button. Puget Sound is Cold! That was close!

Welcome Pineapple, My story is the reverse of yours, while lauching a Hammond last year I broke my route(big mistake) had my brother inlaw back the boat in. I unhooked the winch and safety chain fired the moter off couldn't get the boat off the trailer had him back in more gave it more power still wouldn't come off. A guy walking up the docks laughs and points to the transom that's when I realized the tiedown straps were still on. At least now I know I can't pull my truck in the bay with the boat

When I was 17 my dad asked me to get "a little" gravel and spread it on our driveway. So I asked my girlfriend if I could borrow her dad's classic red 1938 Ford pickup. What I didn't know was that she didn't bother to ask her dad, but just showed up at my folk's place with the pick-up.

We went to the sand and gravel place and backed the little pickup up to the gravel pile and told the guy on the front-loader to fill it up. I now recall that he seemed to smile a bit, but I didn't think much about it at the time. He went ahead and dropped a loader full of gravel in the bed of that little truck.... which proceeded to break every spring and blow out every tire, all at once.

It took me a few years to get back in her old man's good graces. It is amazing how smart we are in our late teens.

You married into one heck of a nice familly!
There is only one person I would loan my boat to. He has never asked, but Chinook_Hunter has lent me his when mine was diabled and I would trust him with mine.

Side Note: We both have good insurance!

Welcome Pineapple!

Welcome aboard!

I once borrowed my father-in-laws truck and a utility trailer. When returning it, I backed it into the side of their car. Luckily I had already married their daughter, so he couldn't chase me down the driveway with a big stick, but I am sure he wanted to!

I just can't believe y'all just let this newbie join the club without telling a FISH story! If I read correctly, there were bunch of in-laws and boats in the story, but not a single mention of FISH. Even the moderator missed this serious violation of the by-law. I believe we're iFISH for a reason, aren't we? graemlins/dork.gif

So, let's hear a FISH story!
