We gator fished in the Rainier, Cowlitz, Goble area yesterday from early morning until dark. No seagull activity on smelt. Lots of harbor seals working the area (10 or maybe15) but no California or Steller Sealion. The seals might be working Steelhead or early Springers

Oh also lots of shakers but no keepers.

Just returned from Carnival Market on the Cowlitz. Three people dipping. Getting 1 or 2 smelt every 4 or 5 dips. More than I expected to see but didn't do any dipping myself.

I still have a freezer full of smelt from last year!

I plan on using it for sturgeon fishing on the Columbia this year in my new boat!

Or what ever...

Hey Blue Water,
Last year dipping up by the market, I saw exactly that. I heard a bunch of yelling and looked to see a small Asian woman struggling with a nice steelhead in her net. She and her whole family seemed pretty upset when everyone told them that they had to release it.

Sturgeon42, unconfirmed rumour is that there are smelt in the Cow.

I intend to confirm the rumour as soon as practical.

I wouldn't break out the nets yet. Just got back from Carnival Market, no one dipping in the area. My 3 year little girl thought we better try anyway. Made 8 to 10 dips, no smelt :depressed: . Also went down last night and there was no one around.
