I not only got my first fish of the year ,but my second and third also. What a great way to start the year.
Drifted the lower Wilson this AM. Water was beautiful. Crowds were non-existant. Saw two caught at Duyck's, but I didn't touch anything. Got out of Dodge just as the wind and rain hit. It's a rare day that I only see 3 anglers below Donaldson and just 9 trailers at Sollie!

Ya I went fishing to day out on the NF of the Lewis river. The river was like up to 11000 cfs and the fishing was hot!!! Hooked 18 and banked 15 chrome winter steelhead on bobber and jig. The biggest one was a 16 pound chrome buck. I lost one that despoolled me. So if you get a fish out there with 150 yards of 12 pound mono and a pink jig in its mouth its mine.
No just joken eveyone. I never went fishing. It was 1 in the afternoon before i got up out of bed.
But has there been anyone fishing the NF or EF of the lewis?

I hit the clack today with my dad(UnSkunked) in Fishing is Life's sled. The day started pretty bad as somebody broke into my truck last night(why!? I still have CASSETTES!!!) and I found this out as I hauled the gear to my truck. We fished for a while in the high murky water before calling it a day.

Well,
reeldick, Redbull and I met up with Safety Chain and his son (who I'll call spare link  ) at Barton right at first light.
We were surprised that the water, while high, really looked pretty good as far as color is concerned.
We worked the water hard, mostly pluggin' with divers on the edges but could coax no biters.
We finally went to some doggin' where spare link hooked what looked to be a whopper but after much debate we determined that it was a greater common black rockfish and the excitement was over.
We did tangle a few times. Truthfully too many times basically because of a loose nut at the tiller usually! :hoboy: But with the water up at least we didn't have to worry about bottom.
Quite a few boats for the day were out but we saw or talked to no one who admitted any fish were with them. We had a couple of light drivebys, but that was it, except for my big catch.
On a doggin' run I went to make a cast without realizing reeldick had his rod behind me. A champion swing resulted in...

I have been working on it for about 1/2 an hour. The Leatherman is out.

This is NOT indicative of 2003!!!

I caught a dark summer buck at first light, released. My brother caught up with a nice summer hen, released that one also. He then past me with a bright hen, too many fins, off she went.
Im still shaking off the disapointment, but I hear it helps to write your frustrations down...Whatever!
Spent an hour in my back yard this afternoon, Hooked a very nice looking hen on Neskowin creek throwing eggs, the smallest pink pearl cork and chartreuse yarn soaked with shrimp oil. I dont think any of it really made a difference because she grabbed it 10 feet in front of me on the retreive, took it back to her tailout and played it hard but didnt move out of her pocket more than 6 feet in either direction...
She tuckered out, and came to me but made a turn down, a turn back towards me and spit it out.
The remainder of my post is censored.

Drifted the Kalama for the first time today. We didn't touch a fish and the other 5 driftboats replied with the same results. The river had ok color but was high and raising all day. Boy did we get wet, the rain wouldn't quit.
I guess catching my first steelhead of the year on Jan 1st isn't going to be a tradition. Bummer!

Yee Haw!! At 12:30am this morning, Low Water Killer and I convinced our wives to let us start off the new year & go fishin' on the Skykomish ( she hates that last minute stuff & I live for it  ). Lewis Street launch & Ben Howard launch were both a no-go as the water was sooooo loooow! graemlins/eek13.gif Boogied up to Sultan (the only place left) & drifted down aways & BAM! First fish of the year on bobber & jig! 6lb. hen yeilded some nice roe. I promptly fileted her & had the wife saute' it on the spot. Yum. Also called my buddy as I was eating to let him know his prediction of no fish WAS WRONG!
Going Saturday. Can't wait.

A 43" keeper for my wife today, so she's already worried about filling her 2003 sturgeon tag  Had another 18-20 shakers between the three rods, but she was the only one skilled enough to actually catch quality (along with the quantity). Great start to 2003!

I didn't fish today, but I took the wife down to the N.F. Nehalem this morning so she could fish. Fishing was slow, but she filled the first spot on her tag with a nice 9# chrome bright hatchery buck. It suckered for a glitter pink/chart. spot corkie and some of the fresh cured eggs from the hen I caught last week. Saw 4 fish landed. One just below the deadline, and three at the disabled platform. Water was at 43" and a nice shade of green. Looked real good. It came up about an inch while we were there. Left at 10 am and it was raining pretty good.
Now it's my turn. Hope to get out Friday and get one for myself.

I was at Three Rivers this morning....didn't see squat caught. I guess the water was too perfect?
Didn't work on it very hard....stayed down at the mouth and around the USFS building; along with about 30 of my closest new friends

HEY EVERYONE NEW GUY POST ALERT
I WILL TRY THIS OUT FOR A FIRST STORY. SINCE WE JUST STARTED A NEW YEAR I THOUGHT WE SHOULD START IT OUT RIGHT BY DRIFTING THE KILCHES ON NEW YEARS DAY. ONCE WE WENT ACROSS THE FIRST BRIDGE WE NEW WE HAD MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE OF RIVERS IT WAS PERFECT. WE MADE THE UPPER DRIFT LAUNCHING AT THE PARK AND PULLING OUT AT THE LOGGER BRIDGE. I DID MANAGE A NICE LITTLE HEN ON BOBBER AND JIG SET UP AND MY PARTNER DID HAVE ONE ON FOR A BRIEF MOMENT BUT OTHER THAN THAT PRETTY WET AND WINDY. HOPE TO TRY AGAIN THIS WEEKEND BUT WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN.
BY THE WAY THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL NEST IN HOGMASTERS REEL I THINK I SAW ONE OF THOSE IN A TREE YESTERDAY. THE ONLY BAD PART IS I WAS LOOKING UP IN THE TREE TO SEE MY LINE WHEN I SPOTTED IT.

I know some fellas don't count troutin' on a reservoir as fishin' but, yes, I had fun yesterday. Put a fly reel and sinking line on a 7' light action spin rod (so there's be enough cork to set in my rod holder) and paddled out in some wind-driven, jumpy water -- waves higher than my gunnels. They were biting -- but in the conditions, I had to hook em', set the rod in the holder, backpaddle into the lea of the boat basin dock, land 'em, re-rig, and go out for the next one. Got my 5 fish in under 2 hours, for me that qualifies as fast. Nice watching the snow coming down up in the hills, too.
