The Sandy Chapter of Northwest Steelheaders is proud to announce our first meeting of the new year. We will meet next Wednesday, January 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Sam Cox building at Glenn Otto park in Troutdale. Our special guest is Larry Schoenborn. Larry is best known around Oregon as the host of the popular and now legendary fishing show Fishing the West. He is also the Larry or Larry’s Sporting Goods which also enjoys legendary status as formerly being the source of the best fishing gear in the area. Since 1983 Larry has been a fishing travel consultant for fishing trips around the world. His company can book you a fishing trip to far away places like the Bahamas, Venezuela, or Russia. Larry will be speaking on fishing opportunities locally, in far away places, and about his company, Fishing with Larry. As always anyone can attend and the meeting is always free. Don't forget the terrific raffle and the cookies and snacks.

Will He be talking about fighting a fish or fighting a coat Hanger
That is when He lost all credability when they showed in Oregonian that He was fighting a coat hanger on the show instead of a fish

FYI,
I wrote that story and frankly was astounded at the disbelief...it's all showmanship on these shows...those guys can't carry around heavy cameras 24-7 and get every shot...
I had a slug of telephone calls blaming me for running it...
The fact is (and please pass this to Larry) that I have the deepest respect for Larry. He's an avid angler and very good at it. When the crew broke for lunch that day on the Skagit, he took a sandwich to the river and kept fishing.
His son, Brad, always dreamed of having an outdoor store and is running one of the best in the region at Bob's in Longview.

AD11 Geez give the guy a break. I challenge you to go out on a given day marked far in advance on the calendar and 1) catch fish 2) get the footage 3) make it look good. I don't blame him for reshooting something with a coat hanger to get the right shot. The fact is they caught fish and did a real service to Oregonians and other northwesterners by featuring local streams and the beautiful fish and scenery. How are your home movies looking these days? Ever try to get a 2 year old to do the cute thing they just did a minute ago? Now try to imagine if you miss the shot on a gorgeous steelhead. Are you going to just show the fish in hand and say "wow, what a fight this fish put on"
Thanks Bill for setting the record straight.

A few years ago we did two show with, Fishing with Shelly and Cortney. We cought and landed 4or5 fish on the show. Those of us that were fishing on the boat never hooked a fish, but we sure landed them. Sure looked good and made good footage. sure glad I had friends fishing close by hooking fish and handing the rods over to our boat. Also glad there were a lot of good sports on Tillamook Bay those 4 days, they gave us a lot of room and a lot of high fives. Hey what ever it takes to make a good show. All for a good cause. Jerry

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of doing two show for Larry in Central Oregon. The weather was 103 degrees every day, the equipment was heavy, and Larry suffered from a very bad hip. Throughout it all, 3 full days, he never complained once about any aspect of the experience. He was most courteous to me and my crew, and never, I mean never, gave up fishing and planning for the success of the next sequence. Lunch on the run, dinner then fishing, and up at dawn to do it all over again.
If during one of his other shows he needed to fudge a little to make the sequence, so what!
Didn't 99% of us love his show every Sunday at 4:00PM. Wouldn't you love to see it again. I know I would! Yes, I'm a fan, but the "player" deserved it.
Rusty
PS
Does anyone have an update on Larry's son Guy??

I had the pleasure of meeting Larry quite a few years ago in Woodland, Wa. Larry's Sportcenters were filing for bankruptcy and they were closing out the Woodland store with a 40% off sale. A friend of mine and I had just purchased loomis fly rods and were looking to outfit them. We were greeted at the store by Larry himself. I told him how much I enjoyed his show Fishing the West, and how we were going to miss Larry's Sportcenters. We told him we were just starting to get into flyfishing and didn't know one thing about it.
Larry took us around the store picking out fly-line, flies, books, and recommended the fly reel we should buy, (it wasn't the most expensive one either). He even put the backing and line on the reels for us himself. After we purchased the equiptment, Larry took us out to the field behind the store and spent a least a half hour showing us how to make the overhand and roll casts.
I will always remember that day. His passion for teaching a little of his flyfishing knowledge to complete novices, his great salesmanship, his friendly positive upbeat personality. Larry, I thank you again!

He and his famly have done tons for the sport I love and the industry that supports my family.
Real life is that almost all of those shows have to be 'rigged' to a degree to make them worth watching.
The man and his family have earned my respect.
As a side note, his cousin is the Principal at my daughter's school and is truely a 'prince of a pal'....... must be good blood lines.

I met him in his Oregon City store. I had about $1.39 of tackle in my hands. He saw me, said hi and thanks for shopping and asked if I was finding everything okay. He could of just walked right past me. The reel deal in my book.

I got my inspiration from watching his show every Sunday. I have over 25 hours of his shows on tape. I don't care if he was fighting a coat hanger to get a shot, he is still cool in my book. Larry did what every fisherman would love to do fish and sell fishing tackle everyday. Three cheers for Larry.
Would love to see those shows and Conways show on again. Talk about nostalgia

His sister-in-law was a substitute teacher in our school and she used to tell us about Larry's humble begginings. He dropped out of college to pursue his true passion of fishing.
She and his brother (Roger) were my neighbors growing up. Roger passed away a few years ago and I know the house is being rented now.
Seen Larry a couple times when I was growing up. I was huge fan of the show. I too was disappointed about the staged events on the show. I realize that it probally had to be done for some shows, but to hear someone cheering and smiling over fighting a coat hanger does destroy some credability. The show was never advertised a semi-fictional account. We were all led to believe it was 100% authentic, so I would hope that you can understand why some of us were disappointed over the show at that point.
Larry is still a great guy, has a great family and has contributed to our sport. He just made some bad business decisions. We all make mistakes. Forgive and forget
By the way...How is Larry's son doing after the auto accident?

There were a lot of days in my fishing life time that I would have enjoyed hooking anything. I always watched Larrys fishing show on TV. Bought gear at his store in Oregon City, liked his show, his store and all he did for fishing. I miss that show. My daughters and my wife always new when that show was on TV because I had total control of the remote. Man, those were the days. Larry was an Oregon business man and I liked buying from him and would today if he was in the trade.

I love Larry's old Fishing the West shows. I've got a lot of them and I enjoy pulling them out to watch this time of year when the fishing is slow. I hope I can make it to the meeting.
