Great site with a wealth of info! I'm fairly new to Steelhead fishing and this site has been great for getting new ideas for the upcoming season. Hopefully this will be the year I punch over 10 steelies. I just got a drift boat and as soon as I get over the fear of wrapping it around a rock, or pinned against a sweeper, I'll get it out on one of the local SW WA rivers.
My story is from my very first steelie fishing trip. My buddy wanted to fish a small urban Vancouver WA creek. We arrived and rigged up. I had no confidence that anything productive was going to happen. On my first cast I hooked and landed a chrome 7# buck. Two hours later my buddy and I had hooked 7 and landed 5. Needless to say we thought we were the second coming of Buzz Ramsey. That was short lived. We fished the same creek almost every day for the next month and only hooked one fish. Talk about beginers luck, we had it that day.

Welcome aboard, trout chaser. I usually just buy the herring in those vac packed trays.

Welcome aboard. There are NO steelhead in SW Washington rivers. You'd have better luck in OR, on the coast down around Tillamook, is pretty good I hear. Let us know when you'll be drifting and you could possibly find a ride along or see some of us bankies pitching eggs.

Welcome Trout Chaser.

I would give the NFL (NF Lewis) a slow drift from Cedar Creek to the Haapa Crusher or from the Hatchery to the Island ramp.

Slow, mild, good depth and nothing to wrap your new DB around. Very good beginner drift.

See ya on the river.
