View Full Version : Official "Steelhead Challenge" Smack-A-Thon

The Fishing Geek

We are just shy of four weeks from the big event where Oregonians, Washingtonians, and Idahoans will fish their favorite rivers in an event that could only be pulled off by the fine folks at iFish.net. For the official rules, go here (http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=018088), for team line-ups go here (http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=018124), and for a place to look for rides or teams go here (http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=018045).

That should cover all the questions, so now we can get down to business. Lay down your best smack and let's see in the end who can back up what they smack up.

A friendly reminder to those who can't stand the heat:

This is a smack talking/name calling thread. If you don't want smack talked about you, don't post on this thread and get out of the kitchen. Or go back to the kitchen and make some cookies or something. Better yet, go get me a Weinhard's (root beer, of course) and shut your trap. Thanks.

Nice Hair Is that what all you young guys look like under your hats now days
Since Team mature won the Sturgeon Challenge it is now only fitting that we show You youngins how to catch steelhead too. One of the guys on the team has a log spanning 38 years and believe it or not has over 7900 steelhead logged. So should be easy to put upp a good number for You young guys to aim for on Sunday as we will only fish Sat as that is all we will need to prevail. We are now interviewing young buck ifishers to see which one gets to go along and learn something. And yes we have our depends with us  But we won't need them just as it says in "An Anglers Astoria" (book Don't forget to Pee before you put your waders onon

Clearwater B-Runs . Need I say more.

We ought to get extra points, since all the fish we are going to catch are the super smart ones that got past Fearnofish.

Oh yes AD11, I'm sure that your Team Metamucil is going to put on a real "clinic" out there. Unfortunately it's going to have to be an Urgent Care clinic, because your life insurance agency won't let that many old folks into that small of an area without a cardio cart nearby.

A 38 year log? Dang, go drink some cod liver oil, or whatever you dustbags take to clear out the plumbing. That can't be healthy, although that would explain the retentiveness.

You all would be better off staying home and pondering whether you have already taken your pills, because the metalheads are going home with the clearer heads that weekend.

Oh, and I will put this out there right now. None of this or any of the following smack-slinging is intended to be taken seriously and is only part of the entertainment until the Big Show.

TFG, you actually know what a rod and reel is and how to use one? I see you cried a river and now it's a two day event just so you can go on sunday. :hoboy: Momma's got you on a short leash.

There are no modems, keyboards or fiber optic cable out in the reel world. Grab your fruity flavored tums and fill your thermos with pepto. Your going to be playing with the big dogs.

Folks, I can see by how this thread is going, and the past smack-talk associated with the sturgeon event, that this is going to get real personal, ugly, and down-in-the dirt.

So, I think it is up to me to lend a bit of civility to this thread without casting slams on any particular individual and/or boat, lets just say...

Team Moose Drool wins!

Everyone else loses!

Perhaps the rest of you would want to stay at home and watch the division playoffs scheduled on the tube for the 11th and 12th.

Oh good, so nice to see WaterLogged step up to the plate with his Wiffle bat and expecting to come into contact with the Geek Heat.

It was awfully nice of the folks in charge of this event to go ahead and extend it to a two-day event. Not only did it allow those of us with busy schedules to attend, but it also allows crackers like you to have two days to try and catch the size and numbers of steelies that I'll get beached in one.

You say my wife has me on a short leash? Not hardly. I'll explain it to ya: Geek sends his wife to get a law degree like her dad, and then when she gets the degree I retire before I'm 40 and fish for a few decades while you find yourself at 70 years old and greeting people at the local Wal-Mart. It's called planning, Mr. DogWater. graemlins/idea.gif

Thanks for your concern about my well-being on that day, but I'll be doing fine. My hopes for you are that those tears that will be rolling down your face from seeing how badly you were beaten by me don't freeze to your face. That'd be pretty sad looking.

Idaho? Who let those backwoods freaks into the game?
Let me give you Mountain hole Iduho freaks some pointers

• steelhead are silver in color not the brown color you might be used to thinking are steelhead

• steelhead do NOT have mouths pointed downward with lips that look like your mother's

• a good substitute for eggs is melon balled potatos rubbed with bananas and sagebrush.

• Magic reservoir has a great run of 6 inch steelhead. Just ignore those idiots who say "hey nice mess of perch you have there" I would advise you fish there. At least you will have a shot at catching something.

• While I realize you are desperate to take home a fish. You can't claim the dead chinook carcasses that you find laying on the riverside as steelhead. Oh wait, I guess those already got picked up and taken home by your brother/cousin to eat while it was a fungus covered brown boot.

Steel, Nice shot, but Magic has NO fish because it dried up last fall.

I do know the difference betweem Largescale Suckers, and Steelies. There are a few large steelies in the Clearwater. The biggest I ever got (yet) is 17 pounds 6 ounces. Seen a few 20's and that's what we're shooting for on the 11th.

As for backwoods, we have no woods. Just sagebrush...(keep thinking that).

Oh and the chinook carcasses...we we have none of those either. Seem some losers built a bunch of concrete speedbumps between Idaho and the Pacific. Apparently providing light for the Portland crack-labs and Seattles football stadium (what is it called this year), is more important than the massive runs of native salmonids that once graced our fair state.

I know there are a ton of Steelies on your coastal rivers, and the Sandy has a few as well, but it takes 3 of those to measure up to a true B-Run.

Hey!!! don't you know that's the early fall/late summer run of the long thought to be extinct run of sagebrush steelhead? These fish have been known to spawn in the open sagebrush and on people's front lawn. Now that you have posted it here they are sure to get overfished because people will know where to fish for them. Thanks to you they are now even more endangered!

At least my state isn't talking about de-watering the Columbia by holding the water back when your wonderful B-runs and upriver brights are migrating downstream as smolts.

Kiss your wonderful Clearwater runs goodbye.

This is some lame smack talkin, Catch and Chow is over the hill and waiting for the geritol to kick in, Wiz learned his lesson a few weeks ago at the sturgeon derby, Giz and team is still asleep drooling on himself, Geeky is to busy writing puter code, Idaho crew is wishing they more than one river to feed fish to them, .... who are the rest of you snivelers??

The only real challenge so far is Wildhawg and he hasnt finished his gender check to see if he is in or out of the competition

Looks like I will have to handicap myself and take a greenhorn along so the rest of you wannabees have a chance. Could I have found a bigger handicap to level the field???

This is interesting to have a challenge where you can choose your own fishing river, the floatillas of the past put us all together to see who could adapt to the conditions on the river chose, now we get to go where we think the fish will bite.

O.K. SandySteel makes a good point! Time to take the interstate politics out of the smack. It isn't our fault that our politicians suck (we tried to vote them all out).

BOE: We have more than one river to chose from. We can go NOT catch fish in the Snake, below Hells Canyon Dam, the Salmon or the Little Salmon. We chose to go CATCH fish in the Clearwater because the scenery is nice, the fish are huge, and it's close to Missoula (home of Big Sky Brewing-maker of Moose Drool).

My only worry is if Fearnofish let enough fish pass by McNary to support the fishery on the Clearwater.

Mojo,

Just to confirm that FNF has let a few trickle thru to the Clearwater. We stuck a fair number this weekend. We were cut-plugging some chromers I caught on the west side earlier this year and the B-runs swallowed em right down. Takes just the right cut to get the spin right.

OK Husker, so where's the smack already?? We're waiting! Last week you were saying something about walking quietly and carrying a big rod or something like that! OK, I won't pick on you yet, seeing as you outfished the rest of our team on the last challenge (not bad for a sturgeon virgin).

I'm not going to do too much of the flappin' for our team this time, we got a ringer named donny, hopefully won't need too much smack talk. Besides, the smack talk kinda jinxed us didn't it! So all I'll say is we hope to do better this next time!

OK People,
What is going on here???????? Someone sets a challenge to fish for mud-sucking, feces eating ugly dinosaur fish that don't even fight that well for their size and the smack talkers come out of the woodwork. What did we have, over 400 posts?

The wiz sets up a challenge to fish for one of the most beautiful, majestic and challenging fish in the Pacific Northwest and I find this thread on page three after only 70 something posts. What a bunch of smack talking pansies.
You wusses aren't even worthy to fish in the Grand Wizard's little challenge. As a famous French Soldier once said. What the heck was I supposed to do? I layed down some pretty good smack foundation and what came back made me feel like I had just played a game of eel baseball.

I realized that nobody could match me, so I let it deteriorate into what husker presented, which was some ugly concoction of equal parts Shakespeare and Prince. Sorry folks, but I can't smack something that wears purple tights.

Tell ya what. I'm going to be on vacation in the next week down in SoCal, and that means I won't be checking in to see whats going on here as often as normal. (You know it's tough to type while looking through beer goggles)

Just did a little logistics work with Born to Fish this evening, and it is looking good for Team Moose Drool. All I have to say is watch out! The Clearwater has finally come up (18") and a ton of fish are making their way out of the 4 lower Snake Reservoirs. By the time Team Moose Drool hits the river...it's gonna be a steelie fest!

Denali is out gathering fresh intel. I'd tell you what he has discovered, but then I'd have to kill ya'.

Well, sharpen them hooks and chill the Moose Drool! Fella's we got us a contest!

Our Steelies may not be three days out of the salt, but they are still pretty nice this time of year.

I have often pondered why the Northwest Steelheaders logo has Idaho, Oregon and Washington on it but the only chapters are in Oregon. I think I just figured out why.
The only state that can catch them is Oregon. Idaho farts are out in the middle of American Falls resevoir thinking that the chub they are catching are some lost strain of brown steelhead. Here's a hint guys. Steelhead can't pass Twin Falls on the Snake. Of course you haven't seen an anadromous fish that high since you sucked up all the water to make alfalfa and potatos. The Washington wussies are sipping lattes with their pinkies pointing southward and thinking that the farm raised Atlantic salmon at Costco can somehow be used to try to win this challenge. Sorry WA WA no you may not use fillets as proof of a caught fish.
{eliminated allusion to Idaho and white supremacists even I thought this was too low}

I hear your motto is "spare the rod, spoil the fish" That why you're packing a "light pole" for the challenge? You gonna smack the water with that and splash them up onto the bank? I didn't see that in the rules! At least bring a "rod" for Husker Jr, so he and Ampersat will at least catch something!

Amp, you still raking leaves?? Haven't heard any smack from you yet! Guess you're playing it safe with those hooligans on your team!  Hey, you didn't get those two front seats in the DB padded yet did you? Husker's hoping you did, it will minimize the amount of squirming he does when you give him dirty looks for putting SKUNK on your boat! A) You ever been in a bar in Orofino? Check the tap handles.
B) Do you know how far it is from Konkolville to Missoula? If you know the answer to that question, you might know how to catch a B-Run.
C) When was the last time the Clearwater froze solid enough to Ice fish?

The real question is what do all these questions have in common?

I only hope, at 480 pics my camera will have enough room for all the pictures  Since we won the Sturgeon Challenge with 3 non ifishers, I invited the first two to answer to go on this trip of a lifetime as every fish in the Alsea has to go through this 4foot by 6 foot piece of water in order to go upstream. I started the thread off in hopes that the true smack-talkers of iFish would step up and knock a few out of the ballpark. Heck, I even put a couple good ones down to set the tone for the rest. Instead what I have been witness to here sounds like the QA department in a squeeky toy factory. Embarrassing.

With no rain between last Sunday and this weekend, the rivers are going to be in pretty nice shape everywhere. Will there be fish to be caught? Most likely. Maybe not "summer run on the Cowlitz" numbers, but they'll be there.

I'll be catching steel. My team will be catching steel. The rest of you all...it's looking pretty grim, but not entirely hopeless. A few of you may bumble across a fish that, in the act of laughing at your presentation, accidentally snorts it in. And considering you'll be using a 15-50 boat rod, deep sea reel, and gator rope for a main line, you'll have at least a fighting chance of bringing that fish up to the boat on full plane as it skips across the water surface. Way to finesse that one in, Cletis.

So tell me, crackers. Is it going to hurt your feelings when someone who gets out fishing maybe a dozen times a year goes out there and puts on a clinic in master steelie spankery? Are you going to kick a can and mope because you're out there no less than three days a week, every week, and you couldn't touch a fish unless it was beached and rotting next to you? I hope not, because I wouldn't want the fishing tackle industry to take a huge financial hit when you quit buying your weekly supply of river bottom and tree branch decorations. People shouldn't lose jobs just because I applied a healthy layer of face on you at a silly steelie tourney.

Lastly, speaking of trees...Chrsitmas is over. Quit hanging your oversized Corkies in the tree branches. Those beach ball-looking things AREN'T festive. :hoboy:

Geek,
Your piddly effort at smack talk amuses me. My six-year-old niece is more intimidating, and has probably caught more fish than you. If you were able to put a whoopin' on the steelies, I'd bet my life that you'd go fishing more than a dozen times a year. All right, could one of you fish hookin' individuals please post a picture of one of those Steel Headed Fish thingies? Us Idahooligans have never really seen one, and since the Challenge is just around the corner, you know, we want to be sure what to keep (or photograph).

Rumor has it that the fishing really stinks on the Clearwater. No not just because it's downwind from Mark and Mad Wiz, or the Potlatch plant in Lewiston. Seems the water cooled down and turned a funny shade of green. Jim called it Steelie Green or something... Hmmm.

Well, the cooler is loaded, (plenty of Moose Drool) Got gas (in the tank), and plenty of bait. Even got a new license and steelie tag. Got me new tags on the sled! Went out to Sportsmans Warehouse and bought some great big metal wiggly thingies, and a couple of plastic do-hickies that flop from side to side. I even got some of those floaty-spinnie-flashy widgets that go on your string, you know the ones. I hope the ol' Danielsons are sharp enough right out of the package to hang one of these slime launchers (I think that's what you guys call them).

Well...wish us luck...Born to Fish, Denali, the gang and I are all heading for the River!!!

K9 -

Sorry for the serious interlude for a moment, but there is no problem launching at Clackamette right now!

Strange as it seems, what happens is that when the Willamette backs up like it is now, it holds water at the mouth of the Clack back and creates a big lake effect. Right now there is literally no current at all.

Drove in there yesterday and saw that. There were 2 brand new Boice Jets there though (no doubt test runs as a result of the show). Sweet looking machines! They may be more suited to heavy water than fishing as some people claim, but they get to where they are goin in style!

One other note. 2 boats yesterday and one this morning anchored at the mouth, but wasting time it appeared. Quite a few fishermen at the blacktop.

Now, as far as the important stuff:

Between the gaseous extrusions out of both ends of the Moose Drool and Silent But Deadly teams, it is a wonder that the fish aren't already declared endangered. And we thought the Klamath kill was bad!

Just for sport, Team Stealth dogs has been doing some math. Steelhead are tough to get this year (unless your name is William), so we just figured the best method for all of you to use is as follows:

Take Buzz quality guys and factor division by pie of the average ratio of hookups to landings to determine what some better than average huksters on the 'Tucker would likely do! If they are only marginal divide the result by two and if they are beginners or general doughboys factor by zero which applies in all cases anyway...

For you math impaired this basically means that we will keep 6, most of you might hook two and the rest will go fishless yet again. Might just as well not bother going, unless you want to watch Bernie limb trees!

Excellent instruction Hogster, but there are a couplethings you missed on. First it is not "Pie", as you claim it to be. It is "Pi".
Pie is what you eat when you are hunting elk.
Pi is 3.14.. and a whole bunch of little numbers.

Other lessons for the day from "Garys Dictionary"

Maxima- High quality fishing line.

Stren- What you use to hang your mothers hummingbird feeders. Also for lead droppers in Tilly. What real sportsman use.Gives the fish a real chance to break free.

Moose Drool- What they watch in Idaho for fun, when the spuds are not growing.

Zipperlip- Any river, lake, stream, crick, or ocean I fish in.

Sandy river- Answer for any question starting with " Where are they catching fish?". It does not matter if you are in Europe, or they are talking about sharks. "Sandy River" is the correct answer.

Madwiz-Martha Stewart in drag.

Wiliam-One who fishes with TNT.

"I caught it on a pink worm"-Outright lie. Fish do not eat pink worms.

Catch and eat- One who remembers when the Deschutes ran westward and dumped into the ocean. Before there were any cascade mountains.

Fishing geek- Only real smack talker left.

Zipperlip-Frenchmans bar.

Sport jet- Boaters fantasy engine.

Mark and the dog- Targets for smack.

Flatfish -

I thought we agreed to leave the "pie" in for C&E's benefit.

Another formula to use is as follows:

Take length of tales given of all fishers in the boat in inches times the girth of the heaviest ifisher on the team. Then divide the result by the combined ifish member numbers of the team added together. Smear a healthy amount of pie on the answer if you are from Washington, beer if from Idaho, or just pass gas if you are fishing the Sandy. The number, if less than 1, is the number of points your team will end up with. The number, if greater than one means you goofed in math yet again (unless you are a memeber of the Stealth dogs). Go back to class.

How long has it been since you visited Idaho?
A) There are no Safeways here. It's Joe Albertsons Supermarket, but the fish department is mine!

B) The Govenment is afraid of us here. You watched the News lately?

C) Idaho is so broke it can't afford Orange Prison Jumpsuits, we'll be wearing hand-me-down BDU's that the National Guard turned in because they were worn out.

Oh, and by the way, I don't think you need to type slowly for us. We are smart. Heck, my I.Q. is over 60, I'm sure.

OK, I am going to be quiet no longer.

1. Roy, beware, the Hampster of death knows where you live. By the way, I understand that you used to be part of Darcelle's crew.
As to your question, no, Big Blue is staying at home. We will be floating in the Stealth Willie Drifter. So while you are bailing out that garbage scow you call a driftboat every ten minutes, Team H.O.D will be riding high and dry and slaying the steelies.

2. Flatfish, You only wish you could see my Lizard. Your Dog would be running for his life.

3. Safety Chain, You Rock. I like the Mascott.

CATCH AND EAT
01-09-2003, 01:27 PM
Hogplaster, I kind of like the decorations I left on the Wilson. Gives it a bright and cheery feel. Puts a smile on your face knowing how much care was put into the job. Don't worry though, the shrimp tails will eventually rot off and the river will smell much better in a couple more weeks. Thinking I missed a real opportunity on the Clackamas though. It could have used my touch this year. Gary, I will see ya during springer season though. Got some old socks that might spruce up the property of yours. I'll dip them in so shrimp smelly jelly before I give'em a toss. I must appologise that my post is not as long as yours.

Flatfish, I am no tree hugger so I don't mind clearing a little brush on the river for fellow i-fishers. Need lessons? I teach real cheap!

Team Moose Drool? more like Team Moss Pool.

Bait O' Eggs

When I limit in Oregon in the AM and then Limit in Washington in the PM would I automatically be the winner? Dont think I could get to Idaho in time to show team drool on themselves how to fish the clearwater. hmmmm.... unless I started fishing Oregon closer to the Idaho border.

Limits in 3 states in one day would be a real hat trick.

3 semi-abnormal ifishers with varying degrees of attitude and complete and indisputable reputations for absurditiy plus 3 dogs - One always involved, especially if there is roast beef on rye, one a wonder dog (sure wonder about that dog!) and one that has "issues" and is confused ("Am I SUPPOSED to poop on the neighbor's front lawn or not???)" =

The Fishing Geek

Well, here we are on the eve of the splendid event and the smack talk thread has arrived with all of the strength of a raw liver steak. Seems as though people aren't as confident of their abilities when the winter run isn't as strong as it was last year, so they're afraid to step up and deliver some talk. Pity.

Luckily for you folks I'll only be fishing on Sunday, so you can have two days to get to the fish market and find the biggest farm trout that they have. Remember to make sure that you are far enough away from the market so that it doesn't appear in the background of your riverside photos.

Best of luck to the thirty other aluminum boxes full of crackers that will be bouncing their boats off of the boulders as they head downriver this weekend. Try to remember that the biggest joy is merely being out in the rain and wind, and that catching fish isn't all THAT important. It will help you cope with the certain failure that you will experience.
