I stewed over where to take my bro fishing today,he is in from out of town. And some where in the middle of the night I decided the coast, and yes, I heard the weather reports. Since much that I had read here told me water was rising I had to choose NFNehalem. What a pleasant surprise-no one else fishing. After a couple of hours we left the NF and headed south to Jennies Backyard. Well the Kilchis anyway. And the water was in better shape than the NFN !
Fished up at the County Park I was reeling in when something pulled back, twice!I quickly handed it to my brother and the fun began. It wasn't typical steelhead and turned out to be a hen chinook. He fought it well, considering. Fought it for a good twenty minutes in a hole that was difficult to beach a fish. The hole had two tailouts at 90degrees to each other so the fish could be swept down one fork in the stream while my brother attempt to pull the fish in from the head of the hole.
I waded into the one tail out and as the fish tired and came up she would spook seeing me blocking her escape route ,back into the pool and current. It was exhausting but more so for the fish.In the end the fish through the hook to live another day.
The lesson: before you hand off the rod/reel make sure the drag is set or the user understands how to tighten it .He would have landed the fish I am sure(certainly in under Twenty minutes), he didn't know how to tighten the drag and was turn the head and tire her.
But what fun!!!!!
