Ok Team Sturgeon Virgin reporting in. We landed 17 shakers biggest 41 inches + just short enough to have to release :hoboy: 4 more were measured and in the 39 to 40 inch class.
5-Cents with 12.
Mrs. 5-Cents with 2 but it was her first time sturgeon fishing... no longer a virgin
Then there is Cracker Joe that landed two fish that were trying to commit suicide. His other 55 strikes he missed!! :hoboy: graemlins/eek13.gif Cracker Joe you have a bite! Wait... wait.... swing and a miss! You're out of there! Thanks for playing graemlins/eek13.gif
What great weather and overall a very good day with a lot of action just no keepers.
If I "win" the baton Cracker Joe gets to keep it!
Fished smelt, both frozen and pickled with fresh/frozen squid run up the hook in front of it... thanks for the tip ****** works good!
Awful quite... I am going to go eat Sushi now when I get back hopefully I can see some results.

Team Fish Fry decided not to brave the fishery wind and started in St. Helens. At tide chane we had a good bite once the tide changed and was running out the bite died. We went all the way to kelly point and stopped several times and could not find a keeper. Got about 10 shakers in little time at T6. Lots of running for little results, the company was good and for that it was worth it. How was the wind at the fishery?

Looks like my team "Sturgeon Busters got Sturgeon Busted" :depressed:
We caught over 40 fish between the three of us but couldn't get one tag. It was a lot of fun and ended up finding a lot of fish but none to bring home. Nice day on the water and it was good seeing you guys.

Oh, and Cap'n Tilla was the one that had to show the crew how to tag Mr. Sturgy using the Woohoochester sauce.

Well when all was said and done team Sneakin Out came home with one 45" and boated 30 or so shakers. a few of the shakers were 41 1/2" on the King James. The one that stayed in the boat was caught by Tilla  we didnot go home with a empty boat like some people I know?

12-07-2002, 07:53 PM
The much awaited report from "Team Catch A Cold" is now here. Those of you that were rooting for us we thank. To answer your question there will be no BATON on Catch And Eats boat.
We fished T-6 area, the punch bowl and frenchmans. Started at T-6 after an interesting 360 degree, up the river, down the river with not a compass in sight boat ride in the dark and fog. After finally figuring out the way down river we made it to T-6.
Witnessed Texas Rig bag a keeper but we will let him tell ya all about it. We saw Fishin Eddie Cook breakfast. Heard Waterdog flap his jaw about a couple of keepers and Tacklebuster was just fishing. Tilla and Fishalot did manage a keeper as they mentioned. Lots of shakers in this area with minimal net management needed. Could'nt get an honest report from Madwizzard. Looks like he posted some pictures from last year.
Moved to frenchmans for about 15 minutes then moved back up to the punchbowl. Lets just say that Spooled is no longer a "Sturgeon Virgin" graemlins/applause.gif 50 inches of Sturgeon weighing 23lbs was his on his first ever Sturgeon adventure. Way to go Troy!!!!!!!!!!! Hey we did'nt win this baby but we did'nt eat CROW either. We had a few fish between 38 to 40 but most were in the under 36 class.
We ordered perfect weather for the Kelly Point area. Got to like that. Wish we could have done the fishery but felt the wind factor would have been a drag. Fishing this weekend was a far cry from last but it sure beat staying home and painting. Sorry Terry, had to say it.
Congrats to AD11 Adventures. You boys rocked down there. nice fat fish and the weather looked pretty good too. Obviously there will be no BATON in your boat and no crow served.
Speaking of BATONS it will be difficult to award this baby. We only had one to give out. Might have been better to purchase a box of toothpicks so that everyone could take a Baton home. Looks like Fishin Eddie will just have to kind of hold on to that baby for a while. I got a little crow for ya too Rod. He he he he he....... The pancakes did smell pretty good though.
Thank you all for participating today. Made for a lot of fun. Wish the fishing was a little better but hey, we were fishing and not sitting home watching tv or painting. Opps, sorry again Terry.
So who exactly are those two young guys with those piggy Gators?
Jennie, thanks for putting up with all of our smack talk and sillyness. It is appreciated.
Nice to meet a few of you folks at the ramp this morning and this afternoon. Awesome folks and an awesome web site.

was catching that like watching paint dry?
ok the real report now.
well the taxi ride started at kelly point ,but after a real slow start we called the fishery and they said the wind was 5 to 10 mph  . so we loaded up the boat and were off to the fishery. started at the fishery at about 10:00in 20 mph winds  that went to 30 by 1:00.just flat out hard to fish in that wind.
ya , the fishery with an honest report on wind.ya right  .makes me feel they needed to sell some bait.all in all i think we need to cut up that baton in to about 60 pieces and all take a piece.looka like most of us got skunked on the keepers,on the worst sturgeon trip i think i have ever been on catching wize.who picked this day anyway graemlins/stupid.gif .i will gladly take my little piece of the baton for my skunk and congratulate all those that managed a keeper.had a great time today with good people.thanks to all that attended, even the skunks in my boat.
p.s
those fish in the pic above are not us.i don't know who those guys are.but the fish look good don't they.

Team #19 - No baton for my boat!
A 47" and 43" plus 16 shakers. My what a difference a week makes. Not the action I had hoped for but we'll take what we got. Had to work for em'.
stinkyfishbait might know bobbers and salmon but he needs some practice at this sturie thang.
Texas Rig sure got lucky right off the get go but the crappie heads werent good enough.
fishingyesIcantalkbutcantcatchanythingfirst, where in heck were you? Cant run with big dogs huh. You ought to get most of the baton since you talked all that smack and then were a no show. Couldnt find any bait huh?

Well,
after a late start we hit the fogbank. Interesting as I had never fished this area before. Several shakers but nothing to tag. I really contemplated hitting the fishery early this a.m. but thought that the wind would be too strong. Sounds like it was ok until noon. All in all it was a nice day on the water.

Team Big Ol' Red Beast reporting in:
Due to complications this morning we did not even put the boat in at Swan Island until 9:40 A.M. We had to leave by 2:00 so we stayed in the Willamette and fished one of my favorite lower river holes. For 4 hours of fishing we ended up hooking 9 shakers and had several other blown opportunities.
Get Hooked stopped by and said howdy sometime around noon and told us that he had a keeper. Just as he was leaving my rod went off and I set the hook on one that was real close to keeper size. Oh well, It was a nice 4 hours on the water. Congrats to the guys that got keepers.

All right. Tanner casting aspersions on my lack of mental acuity is causing me to crawl out.
In short we too can eat some of that baton toothpick.
Launched after sunrise and made the long run from 42nd down to T-6. Got into a good shaker hole, Redbull crackered what surely was a 59er, Mikey caught a 41 I caught shakers, including a good runner that turned out to be connected at the wrong end, and Fishyb, well, she was along for the ride.
We moved, perhaps too soon, to several spots, including down to Kelly, up in the channel behind T-6, back to the nursery and finally a couple spots by the 42nd ramp.
Only confirmed challengers we saw was the Taxi flying by at warp 6, probably right after they made their call to Dodson for the false wind report. We were incognito, unless someone were to have noticed the slightly mangled net with the bent wooden javelin on board.
No, crabbait, Mark took his dog fishing on the Clack today supposedly. B (Where's the report, Flatfish?) But we took Maxine and found out indeed she has a real taste for smelt. We had plenty so it would have been OK except she chose to eat Redbull's after he had attached it to the hook. Close call!
Had to ignore a harassment call from Neutron early in the day, but fortunately he is the only one who knew my cell number...

After reading so many posts of how great the fishing is around St Helens and how a hand picked team of locals, lead by Hogmaster, was going to kick but didn't seem to show, they may deserve that baton and top crow award. What you think about that Catch and Eat?
Sounds like a great day on the water but I promise all that you missed one heck of a basketball game at the Rose Garden. BTY, it wasn't foggy there.

Hey Madwiz,
seeing how you caught as many fish as us today,I will do ya a favor. I'll buy the Taxi. Since her reputation is permanently tainted by a skunk today, the price has dropped a bit since yesterday. I'll give you 372.91 cash, and my Star Wars action figure I got from Burger King. And 3 bottle openers. Do we have a deal? Or should we get together and drown our sorrows with some help from the bottle openers?
Hogmaster, what you are experiencing is known as a "Senior Moment". In laymans terms, you are losing your mind. Which is better than losing a fish.

Ya know, I don't do humble very well. But here goes.. My sincere (ya right) congratulations to those fish catching tall grass romping testosterone laden fish catching studs that used their superior fish catching skills to hook, land and retain a keeper sturgeon today. You are not only better looking and smarter than me, but it is obvious that you are by far the superior fisherman. I am just a dock dwelling crow eating shaker catching wanna be and I am humbled in your presence. And to your skippers I also offer my congratulations on your navigation and anchoring skills. ............ There I said it, now excuse me while I go loose my breakfast.........
In all seriousness today was still a great day in my book, met many great people, had some fun, fished with some great guys, laughed alot and got to know them better and probably made a few life long friends. I must have been confused on the object of this challenge. I was under the impression that you didn't want to catch a keeper if you wanted to win. What's with all these people posting pictures of these nice keepers? All I can say is that you are a bunch of LOSERS!!!!  Team D'oh, We are a team full of WINNERS. We did everything in our power to only catch small fish yesterday. Pete hooked one on that he said felt really good, but being a team player, he made sure it came unbuttoned. The fish kept Pete busy long enough for Mel to add the special garnish to Pete's bloody mary shown in a previous post.
All joking aside, congrats to all who scored the keepers. It was a beautiful day on the river. I had the pleasure of spending the day with Pete, Miss B Haven, and Keta. With company like that and being on a first class boat like the Miss B Haven, how can you go wrong. Ok, I guess it would have been nice to be a LOSER for a day.

Pull out another toothpick for us. 3 rods, 4 shakers, the largest was 38". Fished from 830-330. By far the slowest day of sturgeon fishing I have had in a loooong time. The 'hot' bait, if you can call it that, was a double rig of smelt. Basically two smelt hitched together. Not sure why, but that was what we got all four on.
I talked to a few others around the area and it was nothing but a shaker here and another there. Not sure if the bite was just way off or what.
Anyway thanks to all for motivating me to put the decoys away for a day. (I did take the shotgun and almost got to bag a couple geese though. )

Okay Get Hooked what were the measurements of them fishies? Great job! They look much bigger than Waterdogs gators.
Fishin Eddie, I don't know. That baton thing seems to be a touchy subject here. Ya got Madwizzard wanting to know the total measurements of all shakers only to have the award based on the average shaker. Then you have yourself Rod. You had a lot "flap" but did'nt get "jack"! You need "a motivation speaker brother".
This whole challenge was Fishin Eddies Idea and he did'nt produce for his boat. :hoboy: I am sorry you had to experience that James. It must have been embarrasing. I think we are going to have to have a poll on this one Rod. Seems like you are kind of in the running for this baby.
Folks fishing is what it is all about. We get to meet so many great people on this board. I have yet to meet a bad egg in person at any of these events. This event was fun and uncomplicated. No political motivation. Only a bunch of fish crazy folks trying not to win the famous BATON. Well, some of us succeeded and some of us....aaaaaaaa....ummmmmm....errrrr....did'nt. Glad we had fun and met some new folks. meeting new folks is always fun at i-fish events. I had a blast at the toy drive meeting folks and followed that by meeting others at the Sturgeon Challenge.
Cheers to all that participated!!!! You are awesome.

First, thanks to Catch and Eat for getting this thing off the ground and to all who talked some great smack without getting carried away! It was a fun event.
Spooled, I'm humbled, and my hat is off to you, serve me up some of that crow! Nice pic by the way! (Oh, and can I have a toothpick with that crow?) Yep better make it four toothpics for our team!
We took our chances with the wind and chose to launch on the Washington side up at Bonneville. The wind was nil in the morning. We were a bit concerned though when driving over Bridge of the Gods, it was very icey. Fortunately, the ramp wasn't. Only two other boats launched there that morning, and a few others ran up there from the fishery. All in all, we only saw one keeper caught by anyone there, and that was on the bank! The wind got out of control about noon so we wrapped it up shortly thereafter.
Tom's boat was on it's maiden voyage with the newly rebuilt engine. He was racing the clock for us to put together a team, having just got the engine back a the day of the party. He was finally able to put it in the water to start it just before sundown the night before the challenge to get any kinks worked out. Well, long story short, we had a few issues to contend with tuning, and weren't able to run at full throtle. So, it limited us from running downriver when fishing was slow (I mean SLOW) at bonny.
In any event, fun was had by all. Husker Ron caught his first ever gator, even though it was a shaker! Way to go Ron! Fishnxtc has a few good tricks up his sleave too. You two were great sports, I'd fish with you again anytime! We had a lot of good laughs, got to see a couple bald eagles, one swooping down behind the boat to catch a fish, that was a site! (I hate it when a bird outfishes me!)
Sturgeon Tom, yet another fine trip in the sturgeon catching machine. Certainly, we've had better "catching" days and many more ahead!
MadWizerd, we saw you out there at the fishery, braving the wind, while we were headed home. (of course, who could miss THAT boat!) Hat's off to you for getting the taxi back in the water so quick after the starter problem.
Til next time..... Cheers!

Hey Fishalot, stop making excuses and accept the baton like a good sport...higher on the river....pleeeeease!!!

O.C. Fisherman, sorry that you had to fish with Fishing Eddie all day.....did you get a famous "Fishin' Eddie take down"? You quickly learn not to turn your back on Rod.
Catch&Eat, I heard that you are going to apply to be a river pilot. The first thing you'll need to know is which way the river flows graemlins/1zhelp.gif
Texas Rig, I'll race you back to the put in  Hey, I'm the one that is supposed to have the "hope you start boat" Fishrite

You're welcome anytime Slabquest. I'm happy you made the trip.
We could have dontated all our bait to shakers at one spot, but we chose to hunt for the keepers. Unfortunately, from Columbia City to Trojan, it was pretty bleak.
Beautiful day, good company and fishing. How can you lose?

Oh Bernie, how could you even sugggest that we have the baton  20 plus shakers we were at the launch at 2:30 didn't fish til dark.
By the way lets get it out in the open about your fog navigational skill. I lost C&E and Texas Rig in the fog we decide to follow the Oregon bank down the Willamette til we found the pileings at the end of Kelly point. We start to head northeast on the Columbia here out of the fog comes C&E and Texas Rig. Seems Bernie was heading down stream on the Columbia when Texas Rig thought, I thought t-6 is up river he then catches Bernie and asks where is he headed Bernie then say up river and points to the Ore side of the the Columbia, Billy then tells C&E your headed the wrong way OOOPPPSSSEEE.
Yes I will sit down and eat my Crow like a man with all my other Ifish buddys. But No I'm not the baton holder.
Again it was a great day on the river, it's always fun when you fish with friends.
By the way I hope you waved to Texas Rig as you headed back up to the launch he had to use is kicker to limp back only took 2 1/2 hours :depressed:

Case you missed it Fishin Eddie I admitted it earlier that the fog got me. Where were you? Texas Rig does'nt know his right from his left. I had figured that I had rounded the corner and had already turned with the Rig said you're going the wrong way. D'uh!!! Some people.
As far as crow, I'll eat a wing for myself but this was a team effort. 50 inches of sturgeon in our boat. Your shakers didl'nt even total 50 inches.
Seems you are out of the running for the BATON though Brother. Are ya releaved??? I had ya crying over the weekend thinking you were going have that Baton in its case for a while.

We saw people going one way in the fog, then they were gone, then they were going the other way, then following us, then we were following them, I'm not sure who was going in circles?

Sorry for the late reply. My team consisted of myslef, Kirk and Bait boy. We were anchored up before daylight in the Punchbowl. Made a minor adjustment just after daylight and the action became steady. We were getting lots of bites and hooking about 50%. About 1200 hrs we decided to leave in search of keepers. That may have been our downfall. I did boat one really nice fish outside of the PB; a fat snowbelly but short. we tried about four spots and returned to the bowl for even more shakers. We lost count but consevatively I'd say 30 shakers with the biggest 36-38. :depressed:
Sure glad I wasn't talkin no smack!
We had a great time and enjoyed the scenery. Pete must have been near us because it appears he took pics of the two bald eagles we were watching.
Thanks Bait Boy for your help with the anchor. It was great to meet you. Hope to fish with you again soon!
