The one thing that has surprised me in just moving here from the Everett Wash. Is the lack of Tackle shops in the Portland area. MAybe I Need to look harder! I've located G.I Joes, Fishermans outlet by the race track in Portland. But you get out on Highway 30 and theres really not much. Or towards the Chinock launch. Is there any good small privately own shops around. a local favorete.

A real friendly and helpful shop is Great American Tackle in Clackamas. Its off hwy 205 at the Estacada exit right across from the Fred Meyers. Gary is the one of the best in keeping his customers happy.

I agree with Carver, Gary at Great Am. Tackle has a good bit of stock and the store is small enough to quickly find what you're looking for without being there all day. Kudos to Gary, graemlins/applause.gif graemlins/applause.gif

From Hillsboro it seems that Bi-Mart or GI Joes are our best bet. Small shops open and fail and I don't know why.

Maybe location location location. But that is not true either cause I drive to FMS at Delta park at least once a month. I am in the two mentioned above at least bi-weekly.

I also stop in the area I fish and try not run my visa up to much.

My wife thinks the hunter gather thing is done at the sporting good store. Hunt for tackle gather it together at the take out (checkout stand).

Once in a while I even catch a fish.

Are there any good privately owned tackle shops in the Portland area? A great question. There are a lot of guys here that could tell you of a few that they miss because they went under(financially). If you operated a tackle shop where would you put it?Could your sales sustain the down years, less than spectacular runs, the off season bills?Would it be a wiser move to deversify say to sporting goods and fishing and hunting, camping? You are no longer a tackle store you are a GI Joes, etc. .
In reality, there would be more tackle stores if the area could support it-our economy is based on that principle(supple and demand-build it and they will come).
So,if you would open a tackle store, where would you put it? Ease of access, on the way to fishing, should all be considerations. I thought Larrys' in Cedar Mill was a great spot in general(on the way to the coast) but terrible freeway access made this seem more of an obscure location. How about out there at 185th and Hwy 26th? lets hear your ideas....we've all thought about it.

I know location is the success to any store. I owned a Custom Rod Business. in the Everett area. But most of my customers were in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. I was a little shocked to see only the big chain stores in this area. I wonder how one would do aroung the 185th area. That would be great (just down the road). I was thinking of the Hwy 30 area around Scappose or Cornealous(?) Pass area. It such a pain to not have a store open in the wee hours of the morning for our benefit. How about a ifish.net store? The one little store on the way to Tillamook had my idea going with the sandshimp (they keep them alive with a live well bucket in the fridge. I sure would like to see more in the Portland area. graemlins/idea.gif
