I have a couple personal stories that have never been told and thought if we could share some of the good times, maybe, just maybe, we could Pay if Forward instead of running down the deceased. Or in my case, running over someone that is over the hill. I personally get great pleasure in helping others catch that first steelhead, salmon or whatever.

Jim Conway was a great ambassador for the NW fishing and did much to develope the industry and to build the love I have for it.

I am proud to say that I knew Jim and still like to be greeted by Larry. and that big hand shake.

I had a friend that wanted me to teach about steelhead so I referred him to Jim's Book on fishing the West. He read it and then decided to call Jim to ask a couple questions. Jim not only took the call but took Charn in like a son and they fished many days togather from then on. I was the luck friend of a Jim Conway freind and was invited along on several free trips with the two of them. Jim also had another friend that was blind and fished with him often. I remember that first trip up the Deschutes with Jim and Charn and keep near the top on my favorite fishing trips. That was my introduction to summer steelhead and Jim was a master at it. He knew every rock they layed beside and he made sure we hooked fish. He always made sure the boat guest caught the fish and taught us much.

We have others that are filming some fishing in the NW and they to can thank Jim and Larry for that as they proved there is a TV market in Protland. You just gotta love the Hot
Tamale Show. They show us exactly where to go to catch all the fish we want and how to do it. Just wish I could go along with them like I did with Jim. I am jealeous of you guys.

Do you have a story to share with us about some of our favorite guides or celebrities that went out of their way for you? How about a story about taking a kid fishing that is good enough to warm your heart.
Jim taught me that:

Jim's show was a real hallmark in Portland braodcasting. As a kid I remember watching him fish, I thought anybody that goes fishing in freezing weather in the winter must be a fool. Well, I now fish in the winter - I guess I am a fool-but I love it.I really loved his laugh, very hearty, though I recall a trip to Yellowstone backcountry, he was nailing fish, everybody was. He nets this nice fish for someone in his party and out came this laugh as he missed the fish and it swam away- I was a bit critical of him for that.Course in retrospect if I was nailing fish and I lost one to a bad net job I might just laugh it off too.

There was another guy who did stuff on fishing in the northwest, before Lamear, Schonborn and Conway I beleive his name was Red Dunning,he was old when I was a kid but believe he did stuff for KOIN. He use to have a place up on the Deschutes. He once hosted Gadabout Gaddis "The flying fisherman". Old Gadabout aired a show displaying how good minnows are for the redsides on the Deschutes.Big mistake! My brothers and I noticed the illegal fishing technique and so did alot of others from what we later read in the papers.I think Gadabout Gaddis steered clear of the northwest after that.
Fishing programs are a great 'fix" for people hooked on fishing, yu can live vicariously through the host or just veg and learn. Fishing the West was definitely a cut above even shows made today with great photograpy, music and overall great editing.

Sorry I went on about the shows but one thing lead to another and I was in a nastalgic state.

Letsfish, we all fish through others and this board is a great place to learn as we go. I too remember Gadabouts shows and they were all fun. Now they are trying to outdo their competition and not as personal as they used to be. There was another fishing show by a sports announcer before or about the same time as Gadabout, was it Summerall?

Today I like to watch Hank Parker becasue he makes if fun for all the family. His kids participate in the programs too. I like the Kids Corner, I use that on the grandkids.
