View Full Version : T6 on 11/30
We were there from fog-up to about 1300. Two different areas, two shakers. Didn't get any bites until we switched over to herring rubbed with elk sausage. You got me?! Saw quite a few boats, and only about 6 fish caught, no keepers. Where were all these guys that say they were catching 45 fish?

Probably not too far off from where you guys were. The fish do not seem to be stacked in the deeper holes. You need to fish the shallower stuff until the smelt come in or the water temp drops and the fish get a little lethargic.
If you don't get bit within 20 minutes tops, move. I do average 20 plus fish to the boat per trip but that sometimes means that I move about a ten times or more until I find the fish. Sometimes you get lucky and pull the anchor only once when you get ready to leave but most of the time you gotta work.
Wait until the water temp drops more to fish the deeper holes off the cranes or around the punch bowl. The fish are out looking for food because there isn't a whole lot of feed for them right now. Concentrate on the fresh water clam beds in 40 to 55 feet of water. Trust me, it works........

we were in 82 feet of water and had 30 fish to the boat by 10 am. the key is to have some current wherever you are fishing.
I saw you Dennis, out there. We were three boats over in 44 feet. How do you know if you are on a clam bed or not?

As far as clam beds in the columbia at kelly point or t6 I am not sure where you would look as I dont fish that area as much as some. I usually prefer to fish other sections of the river but so far this year since the reopener my best luck has been in the 70ft or deeper sections. There are some good clam beds along sauvies island in the willamette my best depths there is just on the drop from 30 ft down to 40 ft or so. There is also a big concentration of clams on the north side of the river at the st. Johns bridge. Lately the fish havent been cruising around much and have been holding to the edges of the deeper water. When we get the first good flush of fresh water look for the shallower flats and ledges to get going good, it will expose those clam beds and get rid of the muck that has built up on them over the summer.
It isnt uncommon to drag up a clam stuck to your hook when this happens remember that spot, cause there is most likely something good for the gators to eat there.
Oh and another thing if your into the shakers and the bite suddenly quits dont leave - sit it out for 15 - 20 minutes it may be that the bigger fish just moved in and chased the babys off. Often after a brief period of no bites the next bites you get will be keepers, this is also true in the estuary if the bullheads suddenly quit pecking at you, it is a good idea to give it another 15 mins or so before moving.
t6 is the shipping terminal on the right as you turn right out of the willamette into the columbia at kelley point cant miss it "big cranes", island in front of you and lots of boats anchored off of the tip of the island. Keep in mind the shipping channel goes on each side of the island so be careful especially in the fog.

Have no idea why you guys could not get keepers there yesterday. Pops and I did not get there until 2pm Sunday and the first fish was 48. Had a bigger one on that came all the way to the top and stopped short of breaching. Then to the bottom he went. That is where he came unbuttoned.
Caught lots of fish down there. Our bait was not as complicated as rubbing it with elk sausage but just the basics. And, not a smelt either.
