I spent friday and saturday on the upper Wilson tidewater looking for an early steelhead (no luck), but saw something that was disturbing. I saw 2 different sleds running up and down the river on plane. I ran into 2 other anglers that told me it was happening quit often lately.

The water is low so sometimes you have to jump up on plane to get over a shalow riffle, thats fine. But these boats ran for a mile or more.

So just a friendly reminder, the entire length of tidewater is 5 mph. I have an 18ft alumaweld vs and can get just about anywhere on that section of river without the big motor. So let's all be carefull out there.

When a sled goes over shalow spawning beds on plane it compresses the eggs and fry killing them.

Keta, Thanks but not to many (if any) fish spawn down on that section of river. I grew up on the lower Wilson and can only remember actually seeing a dozen or more reds.

Rebell thanks for the reminder. A few years ago when they imposed the 5mph limit I was at some of the meetings where this was discussed. The marine board wanted to limit the horsepower of boats in this Zone so that the what you saw could not happen. If boats continue to speed in this zone that is what will happen. So fair warning if complaints on this get to the marine board they will impose a restriction on horsepower. Which will solve the problem.
