With all the talk about the steelhead being caught all ready, everyone will be quick to want to switch over to steelhead fishing. This is very common every year. When the steelhead show up, everyone thinks the salmon season is over. Just like when the first springers start being caught, we still have much great late winter steelhead fish left.

With the huge run of fall chinook we had this year, and the fact that the rains came so late, we should have a better than average December chinook run on all the coast rivers. This time of year we often get our best salmon--the ones that travel the farthest up the rivers to spawn in the little cricks. I call these our URB.

Before this last rain, the rivers had some steelhead around but lots of late salmon. Just a reminder to all when you're out chasing your December steel, don't forget to stop and fish the salmon holes too. You won't regret it.

Here are some more pics since my last post. This time of year there are bright fish and dark fish. Having the patience (confidence) to let the dark ones go pays off. If in doubt, let it go, especially the hens.

This day we probably shouldn't have fished. They called for heavy rain and for the river to blow out. As of day break, the river was fishable, and the rain was just starting to fall. It had just been so good all week. We rolled the dice. It rained hard all day and by noon, the river had come up 1 1/2 feet and was brown and leafy. Fortunately we limited plus one for me by 11:45.
