There are certain situations where a very small offering is necessary to entice a steelhead to strike. I get requests from Great Lakes fishermen all the time asking if I can make my same style schlappen jigs in 1/32nd and 1/64th-oz size jigs using a number 6 or 8 hook. A lot of these fishermen have tried using small crappie jigs for steelhead only to have the weak hooks bend out again and again. I've been experimenting with tying different bead head flies using the same palmered schlappen patterns that I tie jigs with and believe I have found the answer to these situations.

The uses for these flies will be very versatile. They can be used by traditional fly fisherman for steelhead, Great Lakes Steelheaders can also use them in place of micro jigs. Also when fishing for summer steelhead where a much smaller presentation is needed, these flies can used as an alternate for jigs. Look for these new flies to appear on our website in the near future.

If you have any questions about these flies, please send me an e-mail at firstcastjigs@firstcastjigs.com
